‘George of Jungle’
swings good laughs
By Gerry Beltz
Film Critic
Egad! How quickly a semester
can fly by, and there are just three
more weeks of holiday shopping
on top of that! The new releases are
rather sparse this week - only two
worth mentioning. Unfortunately,
^while:one of the re teases is= worth>
renting, the other is mentioned
only so you are not fooled into
renting such a piece of garbage. To
make up for this shortcoming, this
week’s pick-of-the-week is of the
finest quality.
“George of the Jungle” (PG) -
This is the good flick this week.
Based on the popular cartoon
series, ^Disney brings the anima
tion to teal life, but plants its cre
ative tongue firmly in cheek,
refusing to take anything seriously.
Turn off your brdin and enjoy.;
It’s a riot.
George (Brendan Fraser) is a
bronzed, muscle-bound, vine
swinging hero who is-a friend of all
animals, fights with the ferocity of
a lion, has the heart of a kitten and
expounds with simple jungle
smart wisdom on love and friend
ship.
He also has the intelligence of
cheese. '; * • ‘
Ursula (Leslie Mann) is res
cued by George after a plane crash,
and after she is found by another
team of rescuers, she takes George
back to the mainland with her.
Granted, the fish-out-of-water
thing has been done time and
again, but Fraser’s physical come
dy really adds to the overall
comedic nuances of “George of the
Jungle.” John Cleese also walks
away with a ton of laughs as the
voice of George’s sarcastic, intel
lectual, simian friend, aptly named
Ape.
A little toilet humor and lan
guage aside, young and old will

“Speed 2: Cruise Control” (R) '
- Ugh. Every job has its downside. |
“Speed 2” is one of those films
that makes movie critics wish they |
could have a more respectable job,
such as pimping or raising funds I
for Democrats. i
Annie (Sandra Bullock) has
parted ways with Jack (from the
first “Speed” movie) and is now on
a Love Boat cruise with soon-to
be-hubby Alex (Jason Patric).
However, similar to some mar
riages, things don’t go very
smoothly. Geiger (Willem Dafoe)
is a disgruntled ex-employee who
hijacks the boat and (in his spare
time) bathes with leeches. Through
his incredible computer skills,
Geiger sends the boat - and a
handful of innocent passengers -
on a collision course.
Avoid. Do not rent. Build a fire.
Get a barium enema. Feed peanut
butter to your fish. Just skip this ,
movie.
PICK-OF-THE-WEEK - Since
“Alien Resurrection” isn’t really
worth seeing, we’ll stay with
something of a higher caliber.
How about “Aliens”?
1 James Cameron directed the
second installment of the “Alien”
series, and while it lacked the hor
ror-suspense of the original film, it_
made up for it in action and more
than equaled it in quality. Ripley
(Sigourney Weaver) heads back to
LB426 with a bunch of armed-to
the-teeth Marines to wipe out the
aliens, but ends up fighting for her
life.
Pure adrenaline here. This is
one of those films that brings out
those meat-eating primal urges.
Prepare for disaster - and
finals week - with “Aliens.” Check
it out.
