Rage video deviates RAGE from page 13 footage from two L.A. concerts, this is one of the best songs that explains Rage Against the Machine attitude, but the lyrics forbid it from being shown on MTV “Bullet In The Head” was filmed at the BBC studio in London and shows the band playing the song in a jam-session setting - without an audience. Three videos, “Freedom,” “Bulls On Parade” and “People Of The Sun” all received heavy airplay in the MTV rotation, but this version of “People Of Tho-Sun” adds some extra bits that would have MTV screaming for the less dramatic Puff Daddy. Also added is a spoken-word performance by De La Rocha. Entitled “Memory of the Dead (Land and Liberty),” it was previ ously unreleased and features scenes from Sergei Eisenstein’s 1931 docu mentary “Time In The Sun” and footage from the Zapatista rebellion in Chiapas, Mexico. This video is enjoyed best viewed from start to finish, and not many bands can keep the viewer intrigued while sitting in a reclirier. Morello’s guitar play - with his expertise and craftsmanship - is the highlight of the compilation, mak ing the lengthy video worth watch ing. 120% OFF Pry Cleaning] i i i i i Present coupon when dropping off j r Not valid with an^theroffer^ExphesJ2/31/97^ j “Live On Letterman: Music From The Late Show” Various artists Reprise Grade: B Following the release of Mercury’s “Live From Studio 6A,” music from “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” this 14-track disc is a collection of perfor mances from David Letterman’s “Late Show.” Out to make a quick buck on the live-compilation compact disc market, the range of artists is respectable and the sound repro duction quality is second to none. In fact, there is absolutely no crowd noise or reverb during the songs, and applause is only pre sent in between songs where Letterman’s voice serves as a segue to briefly remind you where the music was recorded. Boasting one-of-a-kind per formances, “Live on Letterman” follows through on only a few* cuts. Jerry Garcia and David Grisman open the album with a performance of “Friend Of The Devil,” recorded back in 1993. Most of the well-known songs are played true-to-form with little improvisation. However, there are a few stand-out performances. Lou Reed checks in with a charged rendition of “Sweet Jane,” and Sheryl Crow bares her soul on - - - - - ’ - ' , ✓ 2 - * - * >1 2 T, v ~ “Strong Enough.” Also, Paula Cole turns in a surprisingly mov ing performance with “I Don’t Want To Wait.” Closing is Patti Smith with a throaty rendition of “Who Do You Love?” - her Valentine’s Day per formance that reeked of dead roses and year-old sweet tarts. The album also features some unlikely pairings, including Jerry Garcia with David Grisman. The somewhat frightening collabora tion of Van Morrison with Sinead O’Connor and the Chieftains allows Letterman to hobnob with a wide variety of musical talent. Also appearing on this album are Dave Matthews Band, Aretha Franklin, Rod Stewart, R.E.M. and Lenny Kravitz. The general flow of the album is much like the show: smooth yet remarkably unorganized. As far as musical content, Conan’s disc could be drawn from Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks, while Letterman’s would be more from the Mainstream Rock Tracks. Whichever Billboard listing you prefer, “Live On Letterman” is a solid disc with some of today’s most popular artists. Besides, Paul Shaffer could kick the hell out of Max Weinberg any day. -Chris Thomas — ■ i We have spaces we need you to M The Daily Nebraskan is currently taking applications for senior staff positions for the spring semester.
