Daily Nebraskan wins national awards From Staff Reports The Daily Nebraskan won multi ple awards for excellence in publica tion, including Best of Show, at a national collegiate journalism con ference in Chicago thjp weekend. The paper received the Associated Collegiate Press and Society of Newspaper Design Best of Show award for its Oct. 27 “Snowbound!” issue, featuring extensive news coverage of the bliz zard that paralyzed Lincoln. The award is given to the student publication with the best overall newspaper issue among all tabloid sized, daily newspapers from four year universities. “This really shows how we can work as a team and make our dedica tion pay off,” said Daily Nebraskan Editor Paula Lavigne. The Best of Show second place went to the Arizona Daily Wildcat, University of Arizona in Tucson, fol lowed by the Oregon Daily Emerald, University of Oregon in Eugene; The Daily, University of Washington in Seattle; and the Northern Star, Northern Illinois University in Dekalb. For the second year in a row, the Daily Nebraskan also was awarded one of five National Newspaper Pacemaker Awards for overall out standing excellence in coverage and design. “Many people consider the award to be the Pulitzer Prize of the colle giate press,” said Tom Rolnicki, ACP executive director. Pacemaker Awards given to other daily newspapers from four-year uni versities went to the Indiana Daily Student, Indiana University in Bloomington; the Daily Orange, Syracuse University in Syracuse, N.Y; the Daily Pennsylvania, University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia; and the Oregon Daily Emerald, University of Oregon in Eugene. Staff of the Chicago Tribune judged the contest, which was spon sored by the ACP and the Newspaper Association of America. Rolnicki said the judges were professionals steeped with experience in the field, and they easily recognize top-quality publications worldwide, he said. But Lavigne said she saw the award on a more personal level. “We set a high standard, and we met it again,” she said. Three staff members also won first place in writing contests judged by the Los Angeles Times, jointly sponsored by ACP. Lavigne won first place among feature story entries for her story on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln student who gave birth in her resi dence hall room last fall. Erin Schulte, a former senior news reporter, won first place among diversity and multiculturalism story entries for her spring feature on Nebraska Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha. Mitch Sherman, a former senior sports reporter, won first place among sports story entries for his profile of NU Men’s Gymnastics Coach Francis Allen last fall. “I’m extremely proud of the staff and the newspaper,” Lavigne said. “This entire campus can be proud, too.” V Tfreckemidge/Vaif From *189^ Trip Includes: • 6 day/5 night Lodging Jan 4 - 9, 1998 • 4 days of day/nlght skiing at Breckenridge, Keystone, Vail, or Beaver Creek(2 days at Vall/BC) • Parties.
