A crowd of students surrounded the mangled wreckage of a Pontiac Sunfire outside Andrews Hall to watch as firefighters used the jaws of life to extract the “victims” from the car. One of the victims, thrown from the car during the wreck, was dead before help could arrive. The other two victims were care fully loaded onto backboards and into the back of an ambulance. The mock car wreck was spon sored by the staffs of Cather and 4 ■■■ill 'IHT " ' Neihardt Residence Halls to discour age drunken driving. “We tried to bring attention to the drunk-driving problem,” said Ana Campos, Neihardt residence director. “It happens too often.” After the demonstration, law enforcement officials tried to bring the scene home to students. “This can happen to you,” University Police Sgt. Larry Kalkowski said. Designated drivers can help pre vent accidents, Kalkowski said. “You have to take an active role to stop these accidents,” Kalkowski said. “Take the keys away and don’t let your friend drive drunk.” Organizers of the event were pleased with the demonstration. “I hope we got the point across not to drink and drive,” Campos said.
