EDITOR Paula Lavigne OPINION EDITOR Matthew Waite EDITORIAL BOARD Erin Gibson Joshua Gillin Jeff Randall Julie Sobczyk Ryan Soderlin Quotes * OF THE WEEK “He was outstanding, especially in the large introductory sections of American government. He somehow found a way to communicate really well with UNL students despite that format.” UNL Political Science Department Chairman David Forsythe, on the. death of ■» Professor Robert Miewald “Regardless of wars, economic cata strophes, natural disasters, or personal tragedies, the memories remain. In a world of seething changes, baseball con tinues to offer comfort and reassurance; it remains America’s Game.” Professor Benjamin Rader, in his book "Baseball: America s Game ” “I think it’s a big mistake to go back to the governor and the Legislature and the taxpayers and ask for money. Let’s do some belt-tightening here.” Regent Drew Miller of Papillion, on the approval of a $1.7 million deficit request “This is just another example of how television can rot your mind.” Columnist Todd Munson, in a much maligned column on (,The Dukes of Hazzard”and “CHiPs” “So it’s really no surprise that UNL is a “Dukes of Hazzard” school. Most of the people you meet here are friendly, easy going and hip to a truly great TV show, not too different from the Dukes themselves.” Sophomore music major Brian Linnell in a letter to the editor “Hey Todd, you dumb f****r. There are those of us out there that live in Burr fe; wha I guaran-f* * * e that Dukes are tfif^very f*****g room is watching the f*****g Dukes.” An anonymous caller - who forgot about an invention called caller ID - on Todd Munson s answering machine “If we were in a wide-open deal, where we had the Big 10 and the Pac-10 all in the same spot, I’d just as soon stay number two.” Head Football Coach Tom Osborne, on Nebraska s new No. 1 ranking “That guy hasn’t missed a field goal since - well, we’re talking about Germany - since Hitler was a corporal.” Texas Tech football Coach Spike Dykes on Nebraska place kicker Kris Brown “Nebraska’s fans are brilliant in the way they can control a game. When Nebraska’s offense is on the field, the place is like a mausoleum. But as soon as the opposing offense goes on the field, the place is inaudible. It’s incredible.” Colorado football Coach Rick Neuheisel on playing in Memorial Stadium ' “We all have life experiences that have the possibility of being turned into performance material.” Performance artist Tim Herwig Editorial Policy Unsigned editorials are the opinions of the Fall 1997 Daily Nebraskan. As UNL students on East Campus, we have been appalled by some of the petty and immature acts and writings that have appeared in the Daily Nebraskan the last three days. On Monday, Todd Munson chose to write a column that distorted the messages portrayed in two of America’s classical sitcoms: “CHiPs” and “The Dukes of Hazzard.” Many^f the assumptions made by Munson offended “Dukes” lovers. Accusations made about incest, criminality, and smuggling alcohol were falsely stated in this column. It is obvious to any “Dukes” (or “CHiPs”) fan that this author did not sufficiently research the content of these shows. In contrast, many viewers extract messages of family values, respect for the law, and efforts to be a good friend and neigh bor from these shows. Un Wednesday, Matthew Waite contributed to the fire with his col umn, “Motor control.” It may seem juvenile to defend your favorite TV show or the UNL campus you live on, but it is not against the law. East Campus has taken negative heat ever since we enrolled three years ago. We seldom see East Campus ridiculing City Campus, but once again East Campus has taken another blow from its city counterpart in Waite’s col umn. Like Munson, Waite also makes false accusations, but this time they are a little more personal. Waite explained that the student from East Campus had called Munson and used profanity to express his opinions about Munson’s column^ Waite then took it upon himself to accuse the caller of being drunk and unable to think, and literally challenged East Campus to defend itself. So once again, we answer the call to take the stand. Because East Campus is such a small community, most residents are well aware of the offender in this case. We are also well aware that the student was NOT intoxicated when the call occurred, but extremely infu riated, as shown in Wednesday’s I--- ■ m,. ---- paper. The student is quite aware of the mistake he made and has taken it upon himself to apologize for his actions. Waite states in his column, “... and it isn’t even over anything like race, or gender, or something impor tant and fiery.” What Waite doesn’t understand is that Munson’s critique is very offensive to people from rural areas and makes false accusations about “country people.” This is a form of discrimination. We feel the: person who called Munson was just trying to defend East Campus, but his methods cannot be condoned. We have always viewed East Campus as a quiet, friendly commu nity that seems to keep to itself, but it is hard to withstand so much negativ ity for so little action. So now we could challenge City Campus to defend itself, but we won’t. We know there are a tremen dous amount of good people on City Campus, just as there are on East. We refuse to let one rotten apple ruin the whole barrel. Melissa Dearmont junior family science Melissa Shafer senior agronomy Wrong number I am writing -in response to actions taken by one of your colum nists over the “Dukes” issue. This writer took it in his own hands to take a phone call directed toward him in a joking manner and blow it out of pro portion. One problem with his over reaction was not addressing the call himself, but allowing Matthew Waite to comment on the taped message. In his write-up, “Motor control,” Waite made it look as if this person who placed the call was speaking for the whole East Campus community. I do not watch “The Dukes of Hazzard” every time it is on and am sure there are a large number of stu dents and professors on East Campus who do not have the time to do so also. The person who placed the call should have been addressed by this columnist personally someplace else than the university paper if the columnist felt offended or threat ened. East Campus should have not been brought into this ordeal. The second problem I have with Munson is his desire for retaliation. A miscellaneous For Sale advertise ment placed in the DN on Wednesday stated that I had “Mooi*$Jiine so strong it will make you go blind. Call 436-####, ask for Enos. Get some of my Papa’s Age Old brew for the weekend.” This advertisement gained a number of laughs and a few people thought it was real cool. Well, Mr. Munson, it does not take too long to call the Daily Nebraskan at 472 2588 to find out who placed such an advertisement. If Mr. Munson’s advertisement was used as a way to get back at the phone call, well, you used the wrong number in your little advertisement because there was no such call placed from my dorm room. I also do not like you putting myself in a situa tion that you are in. Jeff Graham sophomore pre-vet Seek and ye shall find I agree with Gregg Madsen (Wednesday’s DN). We need to get rid of all pornography for the good of all decent Americans. But we must be careful to root out all the sources of pornography, and cleanse our nation of the filth once and for all. While we’re cleaning tip the media, the mail and the Internet, we must be careful to find and destroy all the books that deal with immoral topics such as illicit sex, gratuitous nudity and incest. Books like the Bible. There you go, a good start for our crusade against pornog raphy would be to bum all the Bibles. Mark Buhrdorf % senior classics ' --.y f;:r > IgjUi|
