, SUMMER from page 12
There?,” is a driven and hauntingly
ethereal cut, yet retains an inno
cence unavailable to most artists.
Written as an ode to small radio sta
tion heroes who changed and influ
enced the lives of young America
by teaching them “politics and love
of music,” the percussion number
starts the album off in fine style.
One powerful, guitar-based
song is “Teenagers Kick Our
Butts,” a satirical look at attitudes
toward today’s youth. “As an adult,
it amazes me how petty adults can
be with each other and with teen
agers,” Williams said about the
song. “I want to encourage adoles
cent suspicion.”
Williams cultivates a deep
understanding with the listener
through empathy and veracity.
Songs such as “If I Wrote You,”
“My Friends” and the title cut,
“End Of The Summer,” purely
exemplify the sincerity Williams
stands for. Evolving from her roots
as ^ traditional folk singer/song
writer, she is attempting to rise
above the confines of the genre,
using her ever-growing fan base as
a step stool.
This undertaking is evident in
the marketing campaign that Razor
& Tie, Williams’ record company,
is pushing. It is the largest drive the
company has ever undertaken.
“At this point in her career, Dar
is set up to have a very big record,”
Razor & Tie co-owner Cliff
Chenfeld said. “She’s built a fan
base with two previous releases and
done a tour with Joan Baez. Those
have both been very good building
blocks.”
In fact, Williams’ last album,
“Mortal City,” sold 63,000 copies
while her first album, “The
Honesty Room,” followed with
53,200.
Currently on tour in support of
“End,” Williams will perform her
soulful music at Liberty HaU in
Lawrence, Kan., Tuesday night.
Doors open at 7 p.m., and tickets
are still available for $ 14.
Excellent style, balance
performed in jazz piece
CONCERT from page Iff
great piano soloist as well as an
excellent orchestra.
Piano soloist Larry Jones did a
competent job, but he overplayed
some parts. Much of the interplay
between the soloist and the
orchestra was completely lost.
Also, Jones seemed extremely
uncomfortable with the jazz ele
ments of this work.
The orchestra, on the other
hand, played the piece as if it were
written for it. The ensemble’s
pitch, balance, phrasing and tem
pos were excellent. Special men
tion must be made of clarinet
soloist Larry Schauer, who played
the difficult opening clarinet glis
sando and many solo parts with
unusual aplomb. Solo trumpeter
Joel Nielsen also made the most
of his opportunities. \
Even though you missed this
concert in person, Cablevision
channel 20 will air it 10:30 p.m.
Wednesday and 8 p.m. Saturday.
