ter place.
Well, the good news is that they
cut an album there.
“Static & Silence” picks up where
“blind” left off and carries the band to
a new level. Its first album, “Reading,
Writing & Arithmetic,” focused main
ly on poppier music, while “blind”
gave way to more ambient acoustic
sound. “Static” blends the two togeth
er into a nicely mixed cocktail of
acoustic and electric guitars.
What makes The Sundays such a
fantastic band, however, is the same
thing that always has - vocalist
Harriet Wheeler. Her soft tone is so
touching, so pure, so honest, so grab
bing that there’s nothing most of us
can do but sit in utter rapture.
Thankfully, guitarist David
Gavurin has taken his time to refine
his skills over the five-year break,
during which he and Wheeler had
their first child and built a studio in
their home. Instead of opting for the
minimalist style of “blind” or the
simple rhythms of “Reading,”
Gavurin added another layer to his
guitar, bringing new shades of com
plexity to the band’s sound without
overdominating it.
From the opening chords of
“Summertime” to the final notes of
“Monochrome,” “Static” is filled with
finely crafted songs, tales of loves
long gone, memories forgotten and
time passed. Each song is a story unto
itself, well-told and pleasing to the ear.
Even at the point when “Static”
lets horns and orchestral sections
play along with the band, it never
loses that classic Sundays’ sound,
mainly because it never leaves
Gavurin and Wheeler’s guidance.
With the release of the new
album, one can hope the band will
tour and come to a town near us at
some point in the near future.
Until then, keep “Static &
Silence” on heavy rotation, and every
day will be like Sunday.

deadly game of cat-and-mouse -
form a duo.
At first glance, “Kiss The
Girls” looks like a rip-off of
“The Silence of the Lambs” or
“Seven,” or even one of those
badly made TV movies where the
victim chases the captor.
However, this film rises above
all that, giving equal weight to
both the roles played and the plot
itself. While not a deep psycho
logical thriller, the “whodunit”
aspect of the film keeps the
audience guessing to the end.

Thankfully, he doesn’t just
reprise his role as the tired, wise

Still, Judd is the shining star
here. She doesn’t just play a kid

justice done, but also a woman
who has her willpower tested to
an inhuman extreme, from
which she barely survives to tell
the tale.
For the most part, director
Gary Fleder (“Things To Do In

keeps the movie at; a decent
pace, though there are a few
slow spots.
Still, “Kiss The Girls” works
very well in both the thriller and
dramatic arenas, and it is very
entertaining. ,
