Athletes meet disabled fans

Fans and athletes descended on
the parking lot next to the Big Red
Shop on Sunday for a tailgate party.
It wasn’t a game day, though, and
these were no ordinary Nebraska
fans.
Disabled children ages 1 to 14
were treated with an opportunity to
meet Comhusker athletes at a barbe
cue near Memorial Stadium.
They also got athletes’ auto
graphs and pictures taken with them.
Some children got to toss a football
with athletes inside Memorial
Stadium.
The opportunity is part of the
Greater Omaha Association for
Retarded Citizens’ Pilot Parent
Program, through which the parents
of children with disabilities are

paired with families that already
have raised children with disabili
ties.
Thirty-five children attended,
with disabilities including Down syn
drome, cerebral palsy, mental retar
dation, learning disabilities and spina
bifida.
The children had fun, but the larg
er reason behind this meet-and-greet
was to get the families of the chil
dren, especially the fathers, to com
municate with each other, said Annie
Adamson, director of the Pilot
Parents Program.
“Sometimes it’s hard for the

fathers of children with disabilities to
talk with each other,” she said.
Yet the main reason the athletes
attend is for the children.
“Meeting the kids and just seeing
the smiles on their faces” was the
main reason Erica Clark, a senior NU
swimmer, said she was there.
And the children also had fun.
Evan Anderson, who was attending
the event for the second time, said,
“Oh, this is great. This is very fun.”
The event was organized in part
by the Student Athlete Advisory
Board, a group of 22 members repre
senting all NU collegiate sports.
The board meets twice a month to
discuss the needs of student athletes,
and to give input on the decisions that
will affect NU athletes.
