KSU game moves to night for TV
ihe Nebraska game against
Kansas State on Oct. 4 will be tele
vised nationally on the Fox Sports
Network at 6 p.m., locally on FX,
Lincoln Cable Vision Channel 38.
The game time was pushed up from
the original 12:30 p.m. kickoff to
accommodate television needs.
“I feel bad about that for the
fans’ sake,” NU coach Tom Osborne
said. “It’s really short notice. It
seems like you are almost held
hostage by television agreements.
But it won t bother us any. I’m sure
there will still be a crowd here.”
New light poles are scheduled to
be installed TTiursday at Memorial
Stadium and will be ready for the
Huskers matchup with Kansas State.
Linebacker Octavious McFarlin,
who rolled his ankle last Saturday
against Washington, did not practice
Monday. I-back Ahman Green, who
left Saturday’s game with an injured
shoulder in the fourth quarter,
returned to practice Monday.

dentials and what I’ve accom
plished,” Sanderford said. “I agree,
the Athletic Department needs more
women in key positions, but why hot
hire the best person?
“Why not hire someone who can
build a program? I’ve been involved
in that process, so why not give me a
chance?”
A period of awkwardness
between Sanderford and the members
of the 1997 Husker squad preceded
the announcement of the new head
coach, he said. Nebraska returns 13
players who competed during Beck’s
last season.
Sanderford’s attempt to build a
relationship with them, he said, was
hindered by the hiring delay.
“The Legislature made things
more difficult than they should have
been,” Sanderford said, “and that put
the players in limbo for a long time
without any direction or leadership.”
Senior guard Jamie Kubik said
the players’ feeling of apprehension
was transformed into eagerness after
the team’s first meeting with
Sanderford. The team appreciated
Sanderford’s enthusiasm and honesty,
Kubik said.
“He’s really down to earth and he
cuts right to the point,” Kubik said.
“If he has something to say, he flat
out says it.
“I am more excited this year
because of him. He’s just bringing in
new and fresh ideas, and he’s really
dedicated to promoting the program.”
Sanderford believes fan interest
represents a key to the success of his
first Husker team. Nebraska will hold
“Make Your Pick Night” today from 4
p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Bob Devaney
1997-98 Nebraska Woman's.

the opportunity to pick their seats for
the season and meet Sanderford and
the Huskers. Students will also
receive free tickets by mail to each of

“We need to start promoting this

program,” Sanderford said. “When I
walk into the coliseum and I see
4,000 fans cheering at a volleyball
game, that makes me believe there
isn’t any reason we can’t get it done
for women’s basketball.”
FROST from page 7
Frost had the responsibility of lead
ing the Huskers on a quest for a third
straight national championship - a
dream that was shattered in a 19-0
loss to Arizona State in the second
game of the season.
“I’ve been very pleased with his
maturity,” Osborne said. “He, for
some reason, has gone through a hard
battering during the last year and a
half. I think the problem was that we
had won 26 straight games and that
he had to be the quarterback when we
lost one. Somehow, people have
never gotten over it.”
Statistically, Frost compares
favorably to his predecessor, Tommie
Frazier, who led Nebraska to national
championships in 1994 and 1995.
In his final two seasons as a
Husker, Frazier rushed for 852 yards
(6.6 yards per carry), and passed for
1,635 yards in 15 regular season
games. Frost, in his first 15 regular
season games at Nebraska, has
rushed for 850 yards (5.1 yards per
carry), and has thrown for 1,715. The
difference: Frazier went 15-0; Frost
went 13-2.
“He is really playing good foot
ball,” Osborne said. “He’s playing,
right now, as well as anybody we’ve
had. He’s an excellent runner, he’s an
excellent thrower, and he knows the
offense.”

coaches rated Frost’s 81-snap perfor
mance against Washington a 1.96 on
a two-point scale, and Frost scored
1.97 with 60 snaps against Central
Florida. Osborne said he didn’t
remember the last time - if ever - a
quarterback had performed better
than that.
“Above all,” Osborne said, “he
just ran the football team very well.”
