Brown and the Husker defense held UW to 43 yards rushing. Freshman QB fills in for Huard ByAntoneOseka Senior Reporter SEATTLE - The biggest college assignment Marques Tuiasosopo had before Saturday’s game against Nebraska was to watch Brock Huard try to beat Nebraska. Neither happened. Huard left the game with an ankk injury in the second quarter, and fra Comhuskers beat Washington 27-14. However, it was the true freshman Tuiasosopo, who had only 12 snaps in his college career before Saturday’s game, who led the Huskies on both touchdown drives. With 12:27 left in the half, and Washington trailing 14-0, Tuiasosopo took the reins from the injured Huard, and didn’t look back. Before halftime, he led the Huskies to their first score of the day, a 12-yard pass to tight end Cameron Cleeland four play, 62-yard drive in 53 Washington coaches and players were impressed with Tuiasosopo’s play. “He did a great job,” Huard said. “A couple ofbig plays, and I think the game is ours.” Huard, who injured his ankle when tackled by NU nidi end Grant Wistrom, coaching Tuiasosbpo biggeitlesson Huattfgave the fresh man, wfaolias not attetidbd an university class, was to “flow” with the garni; and not think too much. But the lesson was easier said than done. Tuiasosopo said there wasn’t a lot of time to think on the field. “I just tried to keep everybody together and execute,” he said. That was difficult most of the day with Nebraska controlling the line of scrimmage. The Huskers eliminated Washington’s running game, and forced the Huskies to rely on the pass. UW, which had been averaging 221 yards rushing per game, mustered just 43 yards on the ground against NU. Tuiasosopo did answer the chal lenge throwing the ball. The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder from Woodinville, Wash., who has 13 relatives who have played some sport for the Huskies, finished the day completing 12 of 22 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns. Toiasosopo found senior split end Jerpme'!*athon three times during his fn&tbreb drives. ^ On his third play in the game facing a third-down-and-9 from die Huskies’ 12-yard line, Tuiasosopo hit Pathon for a 41-yard gain to move the ball into Nebraska territory. On the next drive, he spotted Pathon again, this time for 45 yards on a sec ond-and-13 play. Pathon’s third recep i*a?.. . . .... /' tion from Tuiasosopo, a 36-yard strike from the NU 48, set up the Huskies’ only score in the first half. “He did an exceptional job, and we’re proud of the way he played,” Pathon said. Pathon said despite the freshman’s lack of game experience, he was confi dent in the huddle leading the team. With 6:36 left in the third quarter, Tuiasosopo and the Huskies took the ball from Nebraska on downs. After a 3-yard run by sophomore tailback Maurice Shaw, Tuiasosopo hit Pathon on a 53-yard pass play to give tite Huskies a first down on the NU 19 yard line. After two Tuiasosopo running plays, he then hit Cleeland for a 15-yard gain to the NU 1-yard line. After a running play for a lo$s of a yard, Tuiasosopo hit senior fullback Mike Reed for a 2-yard touchdown pass to close the Washington gap to seven points. But the Huskies never got closer. _ . Matt Miluer/DN AHMAN GREEN challenges Washington linebackers Jeremiah Pharms (No. 4) and Lester Towns. Green carried the ball 29 thnes for 129 yards. Matt Miller/DN RASHAAN SHEHEE tries to go over Nebraska linebacker Jay Foreman (No. 44) and defensive tackle Jason Wlftz. Shehee, a senior tailback, found lit tle running room Saturday, carrying 11 times for 28 yards, an average of 2.5 yards per attempt.
