SOCCER from page 7
“We are moving in the right
direction,” Uppinghouse said. “If
we keep playing like we did this
weekend we will be all right.”
The Huskers second score came I
when an NU shot bounced off
Arkansas sophomore Nicole
Bynum and into the goal.
Amy Walsh scored the first of
her two goals for the game at the 33
minute mark and then freshman
Lauren Tatum closed out the first
half scoring with her first ever goal
on an assist from Walsh.
NU junior Kim Engesser fol
lowed up her three-goal perfor
mance on Thursday night with two
goals against Arkansas. Engesser
finished with five goals for the
weekend tying her with Morneau
for the most goals in two consecu
tive games.
Walsh scored her second goal in
the 71st minute to give NU a 7-0
lead. Another freshman recorded
her first career goal in the 75th
minute. Julie Greco chipped in a
goal to finish out Nebraska’s scor
ing. Walker said the contribution by
the younger players is not only
important now, but could prove to
be crucial later in the season.
Penn State trips NU
LIONS from page 7
Senior outside hitter and All
American Lisa Reitsma led the
Huskers with 13 kills in the first game -
the most recorded by a Husker in one
game this year.
“We should have done it,” Reitsma
said. “I could see it in (Penn State’s)
eyes. We just couldn’t put them away.”
NU sophomore middle blocker
Tonia Tauke had six of her career-high
11 kills in the second game to keep NU
close, but it wasn’t enough to hold off
the Nittany Lions’ balanced attack.
Game three, like the first two, went
back and forth with Penn State prevail
ing 16-14. Despite the loss, the Huskers
were still able to hold the Nittany Lions
to a season low .161 hitting percentage,
well below their .370 average.
“If that’s the No. 1 team in the coun
try, then we’re right there.” Pettit said.
Penn State coach Russ Rose said he
hopes the Huskers and Lions get anoth
er chance to play this fall.
“Hopefully, we could get these two
teams to play again, but I would prefer
it not to be in Lincoln, Neb.” Rose said.
Huskers defeat Wisconsin
BADGERS from page 7
of five Badger service errors, and
broke a 10-10 tie, by scoring five
straight points to win die first game.
Wisconsin coach John Cook said
his team was pumped up after
Friday’s three-game victory over the
No. 10 Texas Longhorns, and could
n’t relax against the Huskers.
“We were pretty tense out there.”
Cook said. “It’s a Final Four-like
atmosphere out there, and we were
probably pressing a bit too much.”
NU held Wisconsin to a .036 hit
ting percentage in the second game.
“I feel like we had a very good
weekend, and we won a very tough
road match against Wisconsin.” Pettit
said.
Two Huskers - Nepo and sopho
more Tonia Tauke - impressed Pettit
with their performance.
“(Nepo)was so quick at the net,
and if you blink she’ll take advantage
of that, and I really thought she kept
us organized when Wisconsin made a
run at us.” Pettit said.
“I don’t know what Tonia has
been eating recently, but she’s con
vinced that she’s found some techni
cal thing that allows her to be a great
attacker.”
Tauke had 19 kills and hit .421
over the weekend, including a career
high 11 on Friday versus Penn State.
“I’m very impressed with
Wisconsin volleyball,” Pettit said.
“I’m impressed with the fans. They
remind me of the fans in Lincoln.”
