Husky coach primed for competition
By Sam McEewon

Never before has there been a
he between higher-rated teams in
Eushy; Stadium than there will be
thi$AS«urday when second-ranked
Washington plays No. 7 Nebraska in
Seattle.
Washingtpn coach Jim
Lambright understands the magni
tude of die game, and is preparing for
what may be the biggest victory of
his .tenure as head coach of the
Huskies. _
“You want as a coach to get to
experience this moment,” Lambright
said. “This game is what you hope to
coach for.”
Lambright, who is in his fifth
year as Washington’s head coach
after being^an assistant for the
Huskies for 22 years, is going for his
33rd win on Saturday. *
Lambright said Nebraska would
provide a measuring stick as to how
far the team has come this year, and
how the Huskies will fit into the
national title picture.
“It’s a huge game as far as us
showing how much we have grown in
the last couple of years,” Lambright
said. “We think we can step and play
the way we want to.”
Nebraska does present several
problems to the Huskies on both
sides of the ball, Lambright said.
Defensively, UW will have to
adjust to the Nebraska option attack,
an offense rarely used by teams in the
Pac-10. Oregon State does run some
option, but Lambright said the
Beavers are not the caliber of the
Huskers in the option game.
Lambright said stopping the NU
option would be important to con
trolling the game.
“We haven’t faced too many
option teams, so this is going to be an
adjustment,” he said. “We’ve got to
guard the quarterback and pitch as
well as possible. We’re practicing
against it every week, so we’re confi
dent we’re ready for it.”
Nebraska’s senior quarterback
Scott Frost already owns a 46-28
victory over the Huskies from his
sophomore season at Stanford.
While Frost’s play has come into
question by some in Lincoln,
Lambright said he has little doubt
of Frost’s ability to run the NU
offense.
“Frost can really run the option
offense well,” Lambright said. “I’m
impressed jvith him ais an athlete

for."
Jim Lambright
Washington coach
When Washington has the ball,
Lambright said he will put an empha
sis on minimizing mistakes. The
Huskies have lost three fumbles this
year, but sophomore quarterback
Brock Huard has yet to throw an
interception.
Lambright said Washington can’t
give the Huskers easy opportunities
to score, specifically stopping NU’s
pass rush.
“They get you in trouble with
some key turnovers and big plays,”
he said. “They put pressure on you by
a combination of pressures and cov
erages. It’s essential we control their
pass rush up front.”
The other element in the game
that cannot be overlooked is the
crowd at Husky Stadium, often con
sidered one of the loudest in the
nation. The stadium seats 72,500
fans, who Lambright said provide
UW with an added edge.
“We’d like to play every big game
at home,” he said. “Home field and
home crowd provide a really big
advantage for us.”
Lambright said that beyond the
players, he is also looking forward to
locking heads with NU coach Tom
Osborne for the first time in his
career.
“I really admire what Tom has
done as a coach at Nebraska, both as
an assistant and now as a head
coach,” Lambright said. “He’s one of
the reasons that Nebraska is as suc
cessful as they are.”
Now that the waiting is almost
over, Lambright said he and his team
are ready for the Husky-Husker
showdown.
“You try and be honest with your
players about how big of a game this
is,” he said. “You don’t have to do
very much as a coach to get your
team ready for a game like this.”
