Trofiles’ runs away with style Good Neighbors flaunt fashion for funds By Adam Klinker Staff Reporter Lincoln’s Good Neighbor Community Center is getting ready for a night on the catwalk - and some UNL students are going to be there strutting their stuff. Sunday at 6 p.m., the center will hold a fund-raising fashion show to raise money for the center’s improve ment programs. “Profiles ’97” will feature a wide line of vintage clothing from the l i 1930s and 1940s as well as a variety of contemporary and cultural wardrobes, Rita Chen-Brown, the center’s director, said. Student tickets range in price from $20 to $25, and can be bought today and Saturday. The show will be at the Comhusker Hotel, 333 S. 13th St. Taking on the modeling duties will be six theater arts and dance stu dents from University of Nebraska Lincoln’s College of Fine and Performing Arts. “We’re starting to get the word out, and interest from students has been tremendous,” Chen-Brown said. In addition to assisting with the fashion show, UNL students have also given their time to helping the center’s tutoring and mentoring pro gram, Operation Kids. The program is run by AmeriCorps, a nationwide service organization. The center’s program is headed by Adam Fletcher, a former UNL stu dent. His work focuses on teaching English as a second language to young Arabian immigrants in Lincoln, most specifically Iraqi and Kurdish children. He said 15 youths, from second-graders to high school freshmen, are taking the course. The children meet after school and get a chance to improve their English reading and speaking skills, as well as social skills. Suzanne Prenger, a junior ele mentary education and ESL major, served with the center and Operation Kids last semester as well as this summer. “I loved it. I thought it was a great experience for me because I got to experience another part of Lincoln’s culture,” she said. Although not currently involved, Prenger hopes to continue her work with the center soon. Chen-Brown said the center always is looking for student volun teers to help with distribution of food and clothing. Fletcher added that as an incentive for student volunteerism, AmeriCorps offers scholarships. He said serving 1,700 hours can net a $5000 scholarship from the company. He said that about 40 UNL students are involved with the Center’s AmeriCorps branch. “The work is great,” Fletcher said. “I am in some of the most intensive work you can have, and working at the Good Neighbor Center is a great experience.” 728 Q.
