Campus Recreation V > 6 events featured atrec ■ Badminton and tug-o-war are two of the events students may participate in tonight at the recreation center. By Nate Odgaard Staff Reporter The Lee and Helene Sapp Campus Recreation Center will hold the third annual Intramural Sports Tournament Night begin ning tonight at 6 p.m. The night features six sporting events, including inner tube water basketball, tug-o-war, soccer skills, badminton doubles, 2-on-2 basketball and 4-on-4 volleyball. Events are open to student members of the recreation center. Each event will include a men’s and women’s team and some include co-ed teams. A climbing wall demonstration will also be provided. Kenda K. Scheele, associate director for structured activities at UNL, said the tournament offers a different form of entertainment for students on weekend nights. “It’s a way to provide alterna tives to going to the bars,” she said. Scheele also said students will be exposed to activities that are rarely provided to them. Tug-o-war and inner tube water basketball, for example, aren’t typical intra mural sports, she said, and would thus “do well as a whole” in draw ing participants. “We hope students will give some of these activities a try and play some sports maybe they haven’t played,” she said. The soccer skills event drew the most participants in the tourna ment’s first year. The event is one of ten offered by the recreation center throughout the year where points earned apply toward the espirit de corps, a special award presented to the person with the highest point total. Students may register for all but one event at the door. Deadline to enter inner tube water basketball was Tuesday. NU cross country seeks its identity By Sam McKewon Staff Reporter In 1996 the Nebraska men’s and women’s cross country teams both easily won the Woody Greeno Invitational. That won’t be the goal for this year’s squads, NU coach Jay Dirksen said. The Huskers play host to the Woody Greeno Invitational this Saturday at Pioneers Park. “We’ll find out exactly where were at this point in the season,” Dirksen said. “For the women, we know what we have, we just don’t know how good we are. For the men, it’s finding out what we’ve got.” For the women, Dirksen said the team is pretty even at the first three positions with sophomore Jaime Pauli, senior Nora Shepherd and freshman Amy Wiseman. “Those three will be fighting for the top spots as far as individual scor ing is concerned,” Dirksen said. Pauli said the team has become more of a unit as the season has pro gressed. “We’re a lot more comfortable with each other right now than we were,” she said. “It’s helped us to run better.” Rounding out the five-member lineup for the women’s team will be sophomores Amie Finkner and Melinda Mohr. NU’s cause was further hindered when senior Cleophas Boor, who fin ished third at the NCAA Championships last year, hurt him self in a bike accident and will not be 100 percent for Saturday’s meet. Boor will run along with fresh man Jereon Broekzitter, who won the Wildcat Invitational earlier this sea son, senior Aaron Johnson, junior Lou Petricca and freshman Marcus Witter. Dirksen said the men should be well-led by Boor and Broekzitter. “Both of those guys are going to perform at a high level when they’re running well,” Dirksen said. “I expect them to do well,” Both teams will face a large field on Saturday. More than 10 schools will attend, with Drake and Wichita State being the Huskers’ stiffest com petition, Dirksen said. Overall, Dirksen expects a good effort from both of his teams. “They’ll run hard,” Dirksen said. “That will give us an idea of how far we’ve come.” Engesser records hat trick as NU returns to win column SOCCER from page 10 half scoring fronfa Stephanie Vacek pass. It was the first hat trick by a Husker player since Isabelle Morneau scored three goals against Missouri last season. Even though she scored three goals, Engesser said she was happier about the team result. “It is nothing too special,” Engesser said. “The team won though.” Nebraska pressured the Iowa State defense until the final horn. In the three-game series between Iowa State and Nebraska, the Cyclones have yet to score a goal, while NU has outscored them 17-0. Uppinghouse and senior Lynne Officer scored goals in the last 20 minutes of the game. Sophomore Amy Walsh almost made the game 8 r 0 with a shot from 20 yards out that smacked the cross bar. The seven-goal performance was I the most goals NU has scored since October 13, 1996 when the Huskers 1 scored 10 goals against Colorado. 1 Walker said the effort on offense was | a big part of the Husker victory. “The major thing tonight was the 1 pressure we applied.” Walker said. | “This was a game where we were I very physically dominant.” Hogan said the score wasn’t as 1 important as the way the team 1 played. “I could see how bad everybody | wanted it,” Hogan said. “There is 1 more of a fire. You can see it in 1 everybody.” 1 Nebraska returns to action | Sunday when the Huskers play host 1 to Arkansas (2-3) at the Abbott | Sports Complex at 1 p.m. GATEWAY BOWL Laser Bowl Color Pin Saturday Nights 9 PM-1 AM $3 per game • Free shoe rental COLLEGE NIGHT WEDNESDAYS • 10 PM - 1AM $10 AT THE DOOR FOR: 3 hours of laser bowline, free shoe rental.
