Classic films will return to screen By Gerry Beltz Assignment Reporter True movie classics never die, and Jennifer Speck is doing her part to keep them alive. Speck - manager of the Cinema Twin Theatres, 201 N. 13th St. - said she had been working for a couple of months on the idea of bringing older movies back to Lincoln movie theaters for another run on the silver screen. International Student Organization Election 1997 Apply for positions: Executive and Councilor Begins: 8 a.m., September 15,1997 Deadline: 4:30 p.m., September 26,1997 Nomination forms available at International Affairs 1237 ‘R’ Street “It started a couple of months ago when we were showing ‘Out To Sea,’” she said. “We had a lot of customers who were older, and I kept hearing them say that they wished there were more movies for them to go out and see. “Many of the people I talked with mentioned older movies, like ‘Singin’ In The Rain,’ and that they just don’t make movies like that anymore.” After that, the proverbial ball began to roll, Speck said. She set up a display table in the lobby of the Cinema Twin with ballots asking patrons to give titles of movies they wanted to see. “The table itself has been taken down, but anybody is still more than welcome to stop in and give |SPRIN6BREAr98| TowBtpScS55a5antced)| FREE^typ^ Rest Assured. Speck said response thus far has been very good. “We’ve been getting a lot of support, both from the older and younger crowds.” One interesting change Speck said she noticed was when the col lege students started coming back to Lincoln for the fall semester. “We were seeing more requests for movies like ‘Grease’ and ‘Reservoir Dogs.’” While “Singin’ In The Rain” and “Casablanca” have been receiving a great amount of votes, Speck said a little movie about a girl named Dorothy is on top. “’The Wizard of Oz’ is the big winner by far.” Suggestions and influence on what films to show has been com ing from both sides of the ticket booth, Speck said. “I’ve always been a Judy Garland fan,” she said. The original concept of show ing older films is where the project will start, but the first movie has not been decided yet, Speck said. “The next step from here is to talk to the film booker and see what films we can get and what would be the most successful,” she said. “And then, (we’ll) try to book it.” That’s not as easy as it may sound, however. “The most difficult part is get ting good prints,” said Frank Rhodes, film booker for Douglas Theater Company. “Many of these classic movies are widely used, and a lot of them are not good prints, so it can be a struggle.” Speck also pointed out another key element that hasn’t been decided upon - an opening date. “We’re having to work around our normal movie release sched ule, but hopefully before the end of the year we will have our first show,” she said. As plans go now, Speck said older movies would have a one week run, but this isn’t set in stone. “If we have a large audience response to a movie, we’ll play it longer. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.” Student sells adultery anthology By Jason Hardy Staff Reporter The word “adultery” traditionally has carried with it a sour connotation, but to John McNally, the word means sweet success. And for read ers of his new anthology on infidelity, the topic is anything but bland. McNally - a University of Nebraska Lincoln English McNally graduate student awaiting his dissertation - edited the collection on the secret seductions of secret lovers. Currently living in Iowa City, Iowa, McNally will return to Lincoln Friday to promote “High Infidelity: 24 Great Short Stories About Adultery by Some of Our Best Contemporary Authors.” He will be at Barnes and Noble Booksellers, 5150 O St., at 8 p.m. for a book signing and reading. McNally said the book covered the entire spectrum of adultery. Some stories deal with cheating husbands, some with lesbian lovers. Some are told through the thoughts of the cheater and others as witnessed through the eyes of a child. McNally said he got the idea for the book from flipping through mag azines. He noticed every one con tained a story about infidelity. Also, McNally’s own experiences with an unsatisfactory marriage piqued his interest in the topic, he said. “Nothing like a bad marriage to give you good ideas,” he said. After some research, McNally found no anthologies of adultery sto ries on the market, so he put together a proposal accepted by William Morrow and Company. The book was published last sum mer. It contains work by John Updike, Margaret Atwood and T.C. Boyle, as well as two stories by Lincoln authors Amy Knox Brown and Marly Swick. Brown - a UNL English graduate student, herself - also will be at the book signing to read her story, “Ray Sips a Low Quitter.” She said the story deals with two law school graduates, one of whom is married and becomes romantically involved while studying for the bar exam. Swick - Lincoln’s third represen tative in the anthology - is a UNL English professor. Her story, “A Hole in the Language,” is about a lesbian relationship between two neighbors. Swick said her talents for writing and teaching are represented by McNally and Brown’s work with the project. Both are former students of hers, and Swick says it is exciting to see them published. “They’re doing really well,” she said. “It feels really good.” McNally said the book was doing unusually well for an anthology, which are usually hard to sell. He attributed some of its success to the fact that adultery is such a hot topic today. “I got lucky because of all the famous people cheating on their spouses,” McNally said.
