    Residence hall improvements continue
By Sarah Baker
Assignment Reporter
With topics ranging from new elevators
to improvements in meals, UNL housing
officials discussed hall improvements
made this summer at Sunday’s Residence
Hall Association meeting.
The officials brought updates on differ
ent departments of housing and gave the
status of all major residence hall projects,
which total $1.29 million in improvements.
Director of Housing Doug Zatechka
said he thought these improvements would
be beneficial to both housing employees
and students.
“We want to do as good of a job as we
can possibly do,” Zatechka said. “It’s
important that students are happy.”
Ron Burke, director of housing food
service, discussed the declining rate of
business in the hall snack bars.
“There has been a decline in sales since
the snack bars started carrying only Pepsi
products,” Burke said.
Burke said he hoped the snack bar
decline would even out during the semester.
“Pepsi is also offering to help us market
the snack bars to students, as well as do
some renovation on them,” he said.
Burke did not know what the effect the
sales decrease would mean for the future of
the halls.
Burke also said the dining rooms would
be getting nutritional information for many
of the main entrees within the next week.
“There will be permanent information
for the hamburger and salad bars,” Burke
said. “We are also working to get nutrition
al values for the pizza from Valentino’s.”
Michael Hager, assistant director of
housing and maintenance operations, said
computer improvements are continuing.
“We have over 1,800 students with
Internet connections in their rooms this
year,” Hager said. “That is double the num
ber we had last year.”
Information technology had increased
its staff to handle the added installations,
he said.
Glen Schumann, assistant director of
housing maintenance, said efforts are con
tinuing to replace elevators in the halls.
RHA also discussed an Adopt-a-Space
on Campus program. RHA President Ben
Wallace said he would like to consider
sponsoring the greenspace.
“It’s a big area, and we are a big group,”
Wallace said. “If we all pitch in, we can
work to keep the space nice.”
RHA plans to discuss its mission state
ment and goals during a two-day retreat this !
weekend at Camp Carol Joy Holling.
