    Center helps
students build
new businesses
! CENTER from page 1__
“Students today want indepen
dence,” Anderson said. “They’re con
fident? They believe in themselves.”
This confidence translates into
students from many academic disci
plines showing interest in owning
their own businesses, he said. The
Chronicle of Higher Education
reports 43 percent of college students
nationwide cite owning their own
business as a primary career goal.
The center provides even non
business students with the resources
to start a business, Anderson said.
With Hull and Runge, Anderson
matched the duo with a business grad
uate student who helped them develop
a clear business strategy, Hull said. As
a result, Hull and Runge run a pros
perous new business and the graduate
student has experience developing a
business plan tried and successful in
the marketplace, he said.
The center will offer counseling
and support for any student or former
student with a good new business
idea, he said, and it will encourage
students to examine international
business possibilities.
The center sponsors an interna
tional entrepreneurship conference
each year at the UNL Pan Pacific
business conference in a Pacific Rim
country, Anderson said.
It also is involved in a joint project
with the Philippines, Malaysia and
Howard University in Washington,
D.C., to look at barriers to small busi
ness growth in Pacific countries.
The center’s other international
efforts include sponsoring entrepre
neurship clubs on 25 university cam
puses in four countries in the former
Soviet Union.
In the United States, the center
sponsors the National Businessman
competition, which is one of four
I"' 1
nationally recognized competitions
for students to compete with new
business ideas. The annual competi
tion attracts top students to the univer
sity and the state, Anderson said.
On campus, student organizations
sponsored by the center run business
es including a nonprofit organization,
a joint venture with the University
Bookstore and the Dinosaurs, Etc.
specialty store in Morrill HaU.
But, despite local efforts, the cen
ter is the most globally-oriented entre
preneurship center in the United
States, Lee said. And he’s most proud
of its students’ dedication to promot
ing entrepreneurship in developing
countries overseas.
