Meaning, in theory, you won’t need a student loan to eat here. 4603 Vine Street, 466-4045, Lincoln Union NBC bank may move to more accessible location By Darren Ivy „ Staff Reporter An underexposed NBC bank in the Nebraska Union may make a move to the north side addition and make banking a little easier for stu dents. At the Nebraska Union Board meeting Tuesday, the 12 members discussed several issues including a possible move by NBC bank, bud get increases to pay for the expand ed union, union grand opening cel ebration plans, and two faculty member replacements for board positions. The board agreed to invite NBC bank representatives to a future board meeting. At that meeting, the NBC representatives will be able to discuss the possibility of moving their bank from its current location in the south part of the union to the new addition. Several problems already exist, though. One of the problems is there is no room allocated for the bank in the new addition. A second problem is that the bank’s owners just signed a new lease for their cur rent location. Board members will have to take these problems into consideration when they make a final decision later this year. Bank officials told Nebraska Unions Director Daryl Swanson that they wanted it to be located in the new addition because they spoke to some students who didn’t even know a bank existed in the union. They thought the new loca tion would make the bank more vis ible to students. The proposed new location would be smaller than the existing location, Swanson said. Another issue discussed involved the board’s budget for 1998. To pay for the increased costs of the larger union, the board plans to ask the ASUN Committee for Fee Allocations for more student fee money. Swanson estimated that the utility costs would increase $40,000 with the expanded square footage of the new building and that hiring another janitor would cost $ 15,000 a year. “We may find out how students feel about the union with their deci sion on this issue,” Swanson said. The money the board is asking for will be separate frormthe $20 per semester increase in student fees that was approved two years ago. Board President Saad Alavi said a survey was given to students two years ago asking if they would be willing to pay additional student fees to finance union expansion. The majority agreed and a plan was made to increase fees for this year, Alavi said. Union expansion is scheduled to be completed by September 1998, Swanson said. A grand open ing celebration committee will plan activities during the 1998 spring semester, but members of the board started discussions last night. Nothing was finalized, but several members agreed to look into orga nizing the planning committee. In other news, the board voted to ask the Academic Senate to fill two vacant faculty member posi tions on the board. The board’s bylaws state that one of the new members must be from East Campus and one from City Campus. The two faculty members on the board are responsible for representing the views of their fel low faculty, Swanson said. « We may find out how students feel about the union with their decision Daryl Swanson Nebraska Unions director 1 Narcotics Lincoln police found more than 25 grams of methamphetamine when an officer pulled over a man on a traf fic stop Monday. When they pulled Thomas Arnt over between Adams and Nelson streets on 14th Street, officers found he had a felony warrant for being a felon in possession of a firearm and a suspended driver’s license. When they searched the car, they found the drugs in a leather bag. They also found his girlfriend’s 6-year-old son in the car. Amt, 33, of 1142 Nelson St., was arrested for being a felon in posses sion of a firearm, driving on a sus pended license and possessing a con trolled substance with intent to deliv er.
