Greek Row a place of history ■ Buildings earn a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. By Jessica Fargen Staff Reporter After more than a year’s work, UNL’s Greek Row has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places this summer, with help from a former fraternity member. The National Park Service select ed houses on Greek Row because its architecture is well-maintained and of high quality and because the houses have educational significance, said Greg Mathis, a University of Nebraska-Lincoln student who helped with the final proposal to register Greek Row. The National Registry of Historic Places is the nation’s inventory of properties deemed worthy of preserva tion. It identifies, evaluates and pro tects the nation’s historic and archeo logical resources. Mathis, who also works at the Lincoln-Lancaster County Planning Department, said the character of Greek Row made it a good candidate for the register. “Greek Row tells the story of a cer tain body of students in a system, and the row is their legacy,” Mathis said. The Greek Row Historic District consists of 35 buildings - mostly sororities and fraternities - along R Street from 14th to 17th streets and along 16th Street from R to Vine streets. Greek Row has made a significant contribution to “the patterns of educa tion history,” Mathis said. Between 1917 and 1920, Mathis said, the number of UNL students dou bled, and the university had little hous ing and no budget for more. So, the greek houses became pop ular places for students offering a “home away from home and a family style of living,” he said. The unique architecture of UNL’s greek houses developed from compe tition, he said. As soon as one house was built, Mathis said, another one would be built more elab orately or added on to, which made a statement to other houses. Most of the houses in the district were built between 1917 and 1925. To be eligible for the register, buildings must be at least 50 years old, said Bill Callahan, National Historic Register coordinator in Lincoln. If buildings are not older than 50, which is the case for Delta Tau Delta fraternity and the Lutheran Student Center and Chapel, then they are still included in the district, but considered non-contributing buildings. Callahan said non-contributing buildings also could be disqualified from the register if inappropriate additions have been made. “Each building itself could not be registered alone, but it is the area as a whole that has a history,” he said. The district that covers Greek Row is not marked yet, Callahan said, because it is not the National Park Service’s responsibility. If the city of Lincoln, the university^ an individ ual greek house wants to mark the area, the National Park Service will provide the necessary information. The idea to have Greek Row regis tered came from former UNL student and member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, Justin Van Mullem. Van Mullem, who now lives in ^amomia, mougni me area was wor thy of historical recognition, Mathis said, and so the project became Van Mullem’s master’s thesis for commu nity and regional planning. Van Mullem had his proposal approved by the National Park Service and then by the National Registry. Mary Ann Holland, office manag er at UNL Greek Affairs, said having the Greek Row registered would ensure that it will always be kept 2<I>E Congratulations 1997 Pledge Class! Greek Affairs had almost no part in planning, approving or researching Greek Row for Van Mullem’s propos al, Holland said. Greek students were concerned when thfey first were told of the pro posal, Holland said, because they thought they would not be able to ren ovate and remodel their houses. But as long as the historical and architectural significance is not destroyed, residents may renovate the buildings, Mathis said. Molly Strom, president of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, said she was proud and excited for her house to be a part of the Greek Row Historic District. “All the houses are quality inside and out, and that speaks more for the architects of the houses. I feel lucky that way,” Strom said.
