Another 4,000 non-students pay $175 each to sit behind the students for the football season. Students buy their tickets for half-price, and all 72,000 tickets in Memorial Stadium have been sold for fall football games. The 3,500 students who sit in East Stadium are unaffected by the pol icy because no non-students sit behind them. Curt Ruwe, president of the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska, said stu dents now have control over whether they keep their seats or not. Ruwe co-signed the flier with Athletic Director Bill Byrne, encouraging students to stand in the foot wells. During a meeting of the chan cellor’s cabinet last spring, Byrne told the chancellor and other uni versity officials that he planned to move student seating to the top of South Stadium this fall, Ruwe said. Ruwe said he was upset by Byrne’s announcement during the meeting. “There’s a very good shot he could have moved them without our knowledge,” Ruwe said. “I just about saw my whole presiden cy go by the wayside.” But ASUN and James Griesen, vice chancellor for student affairs, asked Byrne to compromise with students instead of moving their seats without warning. Ruwe said compromising was his only choice to keep student seats from moving this fall. But Byrne promised by signing the flier that he will not propose another move of student seating next year if students comply with the flier’s request, Ruwe said.“He’s held to this,” Ruwe said. Group urges students to back sports teams FURY from page 1 for each athletic event they attend. Those points add up to earn Husker apparel, tickets and better, closer seats at next year’s football games. Boe said students would get their priority seats when they apply for tickets next year. By that time, all their attendance points from this year will be counted. As another perk, HuskerFury members are guaranteed seats at football games that normally require a student ticket lottery, such as the migration game and bowl game, Boe said. Stacy Lint, a freshman accounting major, said she decid ed to join HuskerFury because she “was just interested in getting involved in sports events” and heard about the club through her University Foundations class. HuskerFury is based on an organization at the University of Illinois called Illini Pride. The group is more than 10 years old and has 1,000 members. Two years ago, the University oi Illinois taught other schools how to start similar groups. Swanson was there, and has been planning HuskerFury every since. Representatives from 12 other universities also attended the con ference to start similar clubs. Boe will meet with anyone who wants to be a member of HuskerFury in the Nebraska Union in three weeks. Information about the club and the meeting will be announced in the Daily Nebraskan. Once the club is started, Boe wants to hand leadership over to students by electing a president, vice president, secretary and trea surer for the club. To become a member of HuskerFury, students can register at the Athletic Department or through the campus mail. Members do not have to pay the membership fee when they regis ter, but can pay later when they find out more about the club, Boe said. Swanson said the club hoped to enlist 500 members this year.
