East Campus earns new lab, By Kasey Berber Staff Reporter UNL’s City Campus has lost a 24-hour computer laboratory, but East Campus has gained one. The Nebraska Union’s computer laboratory lost its ability to stay open around the clock when it was transplanted to Lyman Hall, said Daryl Swanson, director of Nebraska Union. The makeshift Lyman laboratory is now open only from 8 a.m. to mid night on weekdays and noon to mid night on weekends. “I expect that this problem will be resolved after a few adjustments,” Swanson said. “The hall currently isn’t set pp for a 24-hour operation.” Entry to the laboratory can’t be separated from the rest of the build ing. The laboratory’s move was a nec essary sacrifice of the union expan sion, he said. All the laboratory’s computer equipment was moved out of the union this summer, Swanson said. The space where the laboratory was before is now occupied by video games. The union computer laboratory will be unavailable for a year. Swanson estimated that the labora tory would reopen next summer. In a coincidental trade-off, a new 24-hour laboratory has opened else where. Burr Residence Hall unveiled its new 24-hour computer laboratory over the weekend. It is the first 24 hour laboratory available to all stu dents on East Campus. Other labora tories in East Campus residence halls are open only to residents. James Parker, Burr-Fedde Residence Hall director, said tech nology was upgraded in the Burr * laboratory so everyone could use it, not just those who live there.New Power Macintoshes and Dell Power PCs had been installed, and they r could accommodate about 15 stu dents. A security camera was also installed, Parker said. The camera helps keep Burr Fedde residents safe at night, he said. “Any student who doesn’t live in the hall will have to sign in and leave their ID card,” Parker said. The camera then will be used to check students in the laboratory and ensure that they are the same stu dents who left their IDs at the desk, Parker said. “If anyone is missing, we will search the building to find them,” Parker said. “They’ll then be liable for a trespassing penalty.” City erects wall around building WALL from page 1 Johanns said he received some calls from concerned workers at the time of the bombing. But even after the bombing two years ago, several federal building employees are not worried about their safety and think the wall will have little effect. Jim Culver, a soil scientist at the federal building, said he thinks the wall will add safety and deter some potential terrorists, but not all terror ists. “If someone wants to blow up the building, this wall will be a minimal obstacle for them,” Culver said. Pat Clements, a procurement technician who works at the federal building, said he has felt safe since he started working there six years ago. He said the Oklahoma City bombing made him more aware of what was going on around him, but he still felt safe. He is not sure the 2-foot wall will help in the case of a bomb. “I don’t know how much good a wall will do if the bomb is parked ittliuK : across the street,” Clements said. Another employee had similar feelings. Mark Lynott, manager of Midwest Archaeological Center, said he doesn’t think the wall is necessary, but thinks that if the wall gives some people psychological comfort then it is probably worth it. Lynott said he doesn’t spend too much time worry ing about his safety in the building. “You have more chance of being hurt while driving a car in Lincoln than you do while you are in the fed eral building,” Lynott said.
