Colorado has taken the very opposite approach in recent years and has had mixed results. In 1990, CU won a share of the national title despite an 11-1-1 record because of the overall strength of the schedule. That season the Buffs tied No. 5 Tennessee and lost to No. 21 Illinois. But CU has also bowed out of the national-title race many times because of losses to non-confer ence opponents like No. 11 Michigan last season and third ranked Miami in 1993. Colorado Coach Rick Neuheisel said that while he has nothing to do with this year’s schedule, in which the Buffs travel to nationally ranked Michigan for the second game of the season, he favors a tougher schedule for financial and experiential reasons. “We only have a 53,000-seat stadium, so we need to get as much TV revenue as possible,” i «— “Its not going to be tough for us at the beginning ...Its going to help our program to play good teams week in and week out Dave Roberts Baylor coach Neuheisel said. “We may not always win those type of games, but we’re better off for the experi ence, and it’s better for a college football.” That might be better for foot ball but not this season for Baylor, which plays Michigan and Miami before facing conference oppo nents Texas Tech and Nebraska. “It’s not going to tough for us at the beginning of the year,” Baylor Coach Dave Roberts said. “But the national exposure is great for the kids. It’s going to help our program to play good teams week in and week out.” Texas has suffered with tough non-conference slates that have included Penn State and Notre Dame, but will get a break this year with its toughest non-conference game being UCLA, but playing in Austin. Mackovic said he tries to pick teams from around the nation to play before conference season. “We want to get a team from the east and west coast, if possible,” Mackovic said. “We don’t have any real plans other than to play a vari ety of teams.” Much has been made of power house teams scheduling lesser known teams in order to pad the record or to fill a vacancy. Teams like Nebraska and Texas A&M have drawn some heat for playing the likes of Akron and Sam Houston State to start the year. Aggies’ Coach R.C. Slocum argues that big-name schools are left with little choice because of the growing number of teams in conferences. In the end, though, Slocum said it’s hard to take any team lightly, even the ones that are supposed to be pushovers. “Hey we lost to Southwestern Louisiana last year,” he said. “If you’re not prepared to play the game, any team can beat you on a given day.” " ™ 11 1 ■ ■ ■■!■■■ .
