Experience. Tradition. Those three words have never been used to describe the Nebraska soccer team. But after a 23-1 record last season and a trip to the Elite Eight, the Cornhuskers have become a national powerhouse three years after their inception in 1994. This season, with returning first team All-American Kari Uppinghouse and second team All-American Lindsay Eddleman, Husker Coach John Walker has added reason for opti mism. “This is the first year we can say we have a pretty experienced team,” Walker said. “I am feeling as good as ever. I am really looking forward to the season.” The Huskers return experience at every position on the field. Along with Eddleman, Isabelle Momeau returns at the forward posi uon mat iea a poiem misxer sconng attack last season. Last season, NU scored 92 goals, 33 of which came from Eddleman and Momeau. Uppinghouse, a middlefielder, led the Huskers last season with 19 goals. She will be joined in the midfield this season by Kim Engesser, who trans ferred from the University of Portland. Engesser, who participated in two Final Fours with the Pilots, brings experience and adds depth to the Huskers. “Up front we have a lot of people . who scored a lot of goals,” Walker said. “We have a good group up front, and in the midfield we are very strong.” Defense was one of NU’s trade marks last season. The Huskers only allowed 15 goals all season. This season the defense will be led by senior goalkeeper Rebecca Hombacher. Last season, Hombacher had the fifth-lowest goals against aver age (0.51) in the country to accompany Soccer Top 25 Bellow are the NSCAA/Umbro Top 25 College Rankings Rank School Recoed ■ :1r'' North Carolina .; •:. 25-1-0 2 Notre Dame 24-2-0 3 Portland 19-1-2 4 Connecticut 22-3-0 5 Santa Clara 18-4-1 6 Nebraska 23-1-0 7 Maryland 1942 8 Tied Penn St. 15-5-2 8 Tied Texas A&M 19-4-0 . 10 Wisconsin-Madison 15-5-4 it Virginia 12-7-2 12 Harvard 15-2-0 13 Jamas Macfison 15-6-2 14 Vanderbilt 11-8-1 15 Massachusetts 16-5*1 16 Duke 10-10-3 17 Rordia 22-34 18 George Mason 14-7-1 19 WilBam&Maiy 14-9-0 20 Clemson 15-7-1 21 Tied UNC-Graensboro 16-6-1 21 Tied Kentucky 13-7-2 23 WafceFfcest 14-84 24 Stanford 12-94 25 Mrmesota ; 13-74 her 14 shutouts. Nebraska landed the Louisiana, Nevada and New Mexico players of the year as well as some of Nebraska’s best talent. Class or year is irrele vant.” All of last year’s success and expectations for this year have earned the Huskers a place near the top of the preseason soccer poll. Nebraska is ranked sixth, the same spot it finished last season, in the first NSCAA poll this season. “We don’t care what people think of us,” Walker said. “The players set their own goals and expectations, and our expectations are the ones that are important.” Uppinghouse craves sensational season By Jay Saunders Assignment Reporter Playing on a 23-1 team last year and earning All-America honors as a junior could have spoiled Kari Uppinghouse. Instead, it made her want to accomplish more this season. Uppinghouse finished last season as the Huskers’ leading scorer with 19 goals and 10 assists. Besides her individual scoring, she guided Nebraska to a trip to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals and a No. 6 rank ing. Because of her efforts, Uppinghouse was named the Big 12 Conference co-player of the year and was a member of the NSCAA All Central Region first team. “I love get ting the ball and distributing it,” Uppinghouse Uppinghouse said- “My favorite part of the game is being in control and helping to find the team’s strengths.” She should be happy with her role on this year’s team, because it won’t change much from what she did last year. Nebraska Coach John Walker said he will not ask Uppinghouse to do anything differently. “We certainly like Kari to have the ball, because a lot of play goes through her anyway,” Walker said. “She just fits in with the context of the team.” Uppinghouse, who will be one Please see CAPTAIN on 36
