Frost aims to join greats ■ As a senior, the NU quarterback invites comparisons to Frazier. By David Wilson Senior Reporter Nebraska quarterback Scott Frost was interrogated by an out-of-state reporter on media day earlier this month. “Scott, what was the deal with you and the LSU fans coming up here and challenging you to a touch game or something like that?” the reporter asked. “I have no idea what you’re talk ing about,” Frost replied. “I thought that was you that was involved with that,” the reporter per sisted. “I’ve heard about five different stories this summer about things that have happened to me,” Frost said. “People tell me and I go, ‘What are you talking about?’ I don’t know where these stories come from.” But that comes with the territory of being a quarterback on one of the top teams in the country, Frost said. So does being compared to your predecessor. In Frost’s case, he was left to fill the shoes of former All American Tommie Frazier. It was a no-win situation, Frost said. “I think if you would have put Tommie Frazier in a different jersey and set him out there last year and not told anybody he was Tommie Frazier, he would have come under criticism because he wasn’t Tommie Frazier,” Frost said. “And that’s the truth. “Tommie Frazier was a better player when he was done playing here than when he was playing here. That’s what happens when you’re a great player. People start to only see the good things that happen. I kind of got the bad end of that because once peo ple got on the bad side of me, all that they saw was the bad things that I did and not the good things. But that hap pvlld. Despite last season’s criticisms, Frost has put pressure aside this year and hopes to go down as a Nebraska « great. I Last season Frost put up numbers that were comparable to Frazier’s 1 final season in 1995. As a junior, ( Frost rushed for 438 yards and threw for 1,440 - producing 1,878 yards of t total offense. As a senior Frazier pro- i duced 1,996 yards of total offense bu t j won a second national championship 1 to go along with his numbers. ( Larry Frost, Scott’s father and high school coach, blames the media i for the negative perception of his son. i “I think if it wasn’t for the media c continually asking him and remind- t ing him, it wouldn’t be tough at all,” 1 Larry Frost said. “Certain members of the media have blown that so far < out of reality that I think that’s the t only pressure he feels - satisfying £ those people. Tommie Frazier was i going to leave whether Scott came in j or not. He’s a great guy probably and t a great player, but he’s gone.” a Under pressure early last season, < Scott Frost and the Cornhusker 1 offense failed to score against ; Arizona State resulting in a 19-0 i Michael Warren/DN tCOTT FROST pulls back to pass during practice at Memorial Stadium. Frost lopes that his improvements this year will land him a spot in the NFL. Nebraska loss, the Huskers’ first lefeat in two years. “I was really relaxed going into he first game last season, and then ifter the Arizona State game, pressure tarted to build up and build up,” rrost said. “I think the pressure kind >f got to everybody.” Nebraska won all 10 of its remain ng regular season games before los ng to Texas in the Big 12 champi •nship game in St. Louis. But the loss o the Longhorns wasn’t the killer, Tost said. “If we’d have gone undefeated the ntire season and then lost to Texas, I hink I’d have been pretty popular iround here,” Frost said. “But coming n as a new quarterback and then we ust happen to lose our second game, hat got a lot of people down on me. ^nd that’s what made it tough. But it >nly made me stronger, and I have a ot better character going into this 'ear.” A transfer from Stanford, Frost sat out a season before taking over as NU’s starting quarterback last fall. In his first season with the Huskers, Frost was named the Big 12 newcom er of the year, and the 6-foot-3, 220 pounder jumped to 16th on the Huskers’ career passing list. Frost was also one of three starting quarter backs in the country to throw fewer than three interceptions last season. Through the Huskers’ first six games, Frost completed 47 percent of his passes for 595 yards. In Nebraska’s last six games leading up to the Orange Bowl, Frost completed 56 percent of his passes for 845 yards. “If you just look at the film of the last half of the season compared to the first half of the season, I think I was a totally different player,” Frost said. “I can continue that improvement this year. People are going to see a differ ent quarterback out there this year. I can promise you that.” Please see FROST on 25 DRINK RESPONSIBLY <E$nAeud&i/-38jidc&,J%M>.
