Coke says it didn’t have Pepsi’s options
UNL didn’t give drink company
chance to bid on 12-year contract
BEVERAGE from page 2
Association of Students of the University of
Nebraska, is the only student to serve on the
committee, which includes all UNL vice chan
cellors, Academic Senate President Jim Ford,
Athletic Director Bill Byrne, a Pepsi representa
tive and other select university faculty and staff.
Jones said the committee will hold its first
meeting in September.
Klein said the same committee will also
help decide how the foundation spends
$550,000 each year. Another committee con
sisting of Chancellor James Moeser and the
UNL vice chancellors will make the final deci
sion, she said.
The contract requires that the university
spend interest from the $11 million endowment
on projects including scholarships, community
service and outreach, increasing campus diver
sity, academic enhancements, athletic and
recreational activities and support for Title IX
gender equity laws.
Jones said these priorities would also govern
spending of the university’s annual $1.1 million.
Watmore said a small part of the $1.1 mil
lion has already been spent to repair vending
machine areas. Under the Pepsi contract, the
university is responsible for providing electrical
outlets and service for all vending machines and
for keeping vending machine areas in good
repair.
Pepsi has added several new vending
machines and three new vending areas on cam
pus.
The contract states Pepsi must provide all
beverages served by the university except for
tap water, coffee or tea catered at university
events and alcoholic beverages, which Pepsi
does not offer.
Privately catered events at the university
may serve competitors’ products, the contract
states, but all leftover bottles, cans or other evi
dence of the beverages served must be “prompt
ly removed at the conclusion of the event.”
Burger King continues to serve Coca-Cola
products at its Nebraska Union location, said
Daryl Swanson, Nebraska Union director.
Burger King’s national chain serves Coca
Cola products, and the Nebraska Union Burger
King will continue to serve Coca-Cola until its
contract for union space expires on July 1,1998.
If Burger King wishes to use the space after
next summer, it will have to go against its
national standard and serve Pepsi products,
Swanson said. He said Burger King officials
said they would likely sell Pepsi to keep their
space in the union.
Amigos, Imperial Palace Express and
Subway, also in Nebraska Union, sell Pepsi
products, Swanson said.
The union’s Bakery stopped selling Coca
Cola products this summer, he said.
The Nebraska East Union food area also
serves only Pepsi, he said, as do the express food
carts in various campus buildings.
The change in vending machines resulted in
eight UNL vending services employees losing
their jobs July 1.
Watmore, the liaison to Pepsi, said the two
students and six staff members affected were
offered jobs in other areas of the university. All
but one employee took pay cuts to remain at the
university.
Pepsi granted a job interview to the employ
ee who did not accept a university position,
Watmore said. The contract required Pepsi to
consider those university employees that lost
their jobs in the beverage switch for positions in
vending at the company.
Pepsi didn’t intend for university employees
to suffer from the switch, Watmore said.
“You couldn’t ask for better people to work
with than the Pepsi people,” she said.
