Beat writer Burroughs, 83, dies of heart attack
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) —
William S. Burroughs' unapologetic
writing about hard drinking, heroin
addiction and homosexuality inspired
Beat Generation writers to question a
postwar American society epitomized
by “Leave It To Beaver.”
The writer died Saturday at age
83, a day after suffering a heart attack.
His legacy includes the novel
“Naked Lunch,” a landmark literary
work that traded standard narrative
prose for a rambling, stream-of-con
sciousness approach many Beat writ
ers borrowed.
Praised by some as a visionary
genius and reviled by others as a
depraved drug addict, Burroughs' life
story reads like a painful modern
tragedy.
The Harvard-educated writer
(class of ’36) became a junkie after
moving to New York City and never
settled down for decades, living in
New Orleans, Mexico City, Paris,
London, Africa and South America
during a 15-year period when he did
little writing.
In 1951, in a real-life replaying of
the William Tell legend, he killed his
common-law wife while trying to
shoot a liquor glass set on her head.
His namesake son, bom in 1947, was
an alcoholic and drug addict who died
of cirrhosis of the liver in 1981
The unconventional novel
"Naked Lunch," first published in
1959, depicted, in graphic terms, an
underground world fighting an
increasingly self-destructive techno
logical society.
It became the subject of a prece
dent-setting obscenity trial because of
its violence and explicit sexual pas
sages. Publishers eventually won an
appeal in Boston, and the book was
published in the United States in
1962.
“Naked Lunch” prompted influ
ential author Norman Mailer to say
Burroughs was possibly the most tal
ented writer in America.
Future Beat legends Allen
Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, who met
the older writer in the 1940s, became
literary followers. Kerouac adopted a
similar stream-of-consciousness
prose style and Ginsberg mirrored
much of Burroughs' scathing social
criticism in his poetry.
“He became an elder statesman
for a lot of people," said Morris
Dickstein, an English professor at
City University of New York.
Burroughs died after leading a
reclusive life in the University of
Kansas town of Lawrence for about
15 years.
Burroughs moved to Kansas in
1981 at his secretary's urging after the
writer had begun using drugs again.
He went on to write more convention
al works, including "Place of the
Dead Roads" in 1984 and "The
Western Lands" in 1987.
He also wrote screenplays and
appeared in films including
"Twister" and "Drugstore Cowboy,"
in which he played an aging, unrepen
tant drug addict.
