UNL student drowns in lake By Anyone Oseka Staff Reporter Ben Silverstein wanted people to think he was an original. He even wrote it down so people would get it right when he was gone. Jody Ambroz, a friend of Silverstein’s attended his funeral Wednesday. She said that he left his own mission statement for when he died, and it read like this: “Ben Silverstein is one of a kind. He always found a way to make people laugh. He was the most cheerful and energetic person that I have ever met. He was not only a great friend, he was a gentleman.’” University of Nebraska-Lincoln student, Silverstein, 18, was found dead Sunday morning, drowned in Legge’s LaKe, iz miles wesi of Fremont. Silverstein was a sophomore broadcasting major and a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. Ambroz said she was positive Silverstein would have been a success in life. “I know Ben would have been successful in the broadcasting field because of his ener getic personality and ability to make people smile,” she said. They were swimming from an island to the shore at 4 a.m. when Silverstein disappeared from view. His body was recovered by the Fremont Fire Department dive team at 5:05 a.m. Services were Wednesday in Omaha. At 4 a.m., Silverstein and some friends decided to go for a late swim, swimming from a small island in the middle of the lake back to the shore. At 4:04 a.m., the first call to the North Bend Volunteer Fire Department was taken. They arrived at 4:14 a.m. Five minutes later, the Fremont Fire Department dive team was called. The Fremont dive team left at 4:35 a.m., arriving at the lake at 5 a.m. Sivlerstein’s body was recovered a few minutes later. Huskers maintain postseason ranking From Staff Reports The Nebraska women’s soccer team will begin the 1997 season in the same position as it finished the 1996 season, claiming the No. 6 spot in the first NSCAA/Umbro Top 25 poll. USA Today released the top 10 teams Wednesday. The Huskers also earned a No. 6 ranking in the final 1996 NSCAA/Umbro Top 25. Nebraska returns 15 letterwin ners, including 10 starters and its top seven point-getters from the team that posted a 23-1 -0 record and traveled to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. Defending national champion North Carolina claimed the No. 1 spot, while 1996 runner-up Notre Dame was second. Portland is ranked third, while Connecticut is fourth and Santa Clara is fifth. The Nebraska women’s soccer team will present “Meet and Beat the Huskers” at the Abbott Sports com plex on Aug. 21 at 6:30 p.m. The Abbott Sports complex is located 1 miles north of Cornhusker Highway on 70th St. The “Meet and Beat the Huskers” clinic is designed to promote interest in youth soccer throughout the com munity of Lincoln and the state of Nebraska, provide an opportunity for media and fans to get to know Nebraska soccer players and coaches and give everyone involved a chance to have fun for free. The carnival-like clinic will be broken down into several stations, including a juggling station, dribbling relays, penalty kicks against Nebraska goalkeepers, blocking shots against the automatic ball machine, 2 on-2 heading games and 3-on-3 games against the Huskers. Fans will also have a chance to get pictures and autographs, meet Herbie Husker and Lil’ Red and win several prizes. The Huskers will also hold a pre season scrimmage open to the public at no admission charge on Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. Street changes, parking garage among alterations on UNL campus From Staff Reports Whether students are walking, riding or driving on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus this fall, several changes by Parking and Transit Services will affect them. Starting on Monday, two streets on City Campus will become one way roads. Avery Ave. will become a one way street going east from Stadium Drive to 14th St; and 15th St. will become a one-way street going north from S to U streets. Tad McDowell, manager of UNL’s Parking and Transit Services, said both streets were owned and maintained by the university. “These changes were made to more effectively control traffic flow and congestion and to satisfy safety concerns,” McDowell said, The university’s new 600-stall parking structure will open for busi ness on Aug. 30, this season’s first home football Saturday.
