Huskers to host game m preseason tourney From Staff Reports The Nebraska women’s basketball team will host a first-round game in this year’s Preseason National Invitation Tournament, it was announced Tuesday. The Huskers, under new coach Paul Sanderford, will host Miami of Ohio on Nov. 14 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Game times will be announced at a later date. “Personally, I’d like to thank Dr. Barbara Hibner (associate athletic director) for submitting the bid and giving us an opportunity to play in the Preseason NIT,” Sanderford said. “There won’t be a lot of time to pre pare and put a new system in before the first game, but this will give us an indication as to how well we can com pete in the Big 12 Conference.” Nebraska returns three starters, including All-Big 12 performer Anna DeForge, from last year’s 19-9 team. The Huskers lose only three players from last year’s squad, a team that defeated two top 25 opponents. The WNIT is loaded with talent, however. Seven 1997 NCAA Tournament teams are in the WNIT 16-team bracket. Amonig those are Alabama, which would likely be Nebraska’s second round opponent if the Huskers advance, and Westeri Kentucky, where Sanderford was thi head coach for 15 seasons prior to thi year. Connecticut, which spent nearl; all of last season ranked No. 1 in thi nation, is also in the field. “The WNIT is a challenge, but think out kids are looking forward t< playing in it,” Sanderford said. “It’ exciting to be playing the first basket ball in the country and having thi opportunity to advance and appear oi national television. I think it’s a posi tive for this team and this program.” Second round games as well a the WNIT semifinals and finals wil be held on campus sites. JACKSON and Kelly Rowan star as a close-to-the-edge teacher and a promising student in ‘187.’ Cinematography becomes true shining star in 187’ 187 from page 4 out the administration is more con cerned about what is legal than what is right. These students are pushing Garfield toward the edge, but they don’t know just how close the edge he was before they started. Jackson is ... acceptable in his performance, but instead of coming across as a man who has reached the end of his rope, he’s just another robotic presence in the halls. His character actions show he is someone who cares, and eventually comes around to some decent final moments. Other than that, his acting could have been better used in donut commercials. Heard is a loud-mothed jerk, plain and simple. You keep expecting him to challenge his sudents to a J belching contest or something. If his character wasn’t so pathetic, he’d be comic relief. Her character is pulled and pushed between ideal ism and reality; between fear of reprisal and fighting back. Good work from a fairly fresh face. The camerawork for “187” has a definite music video feel to it, with vibrant colors and all sorts of differ ent visual styles coming into play. Actually, this is the true highlight of the film above any of the perfor mances. True, the “school-in-da-hood” movies are getting a bit old, but “ 187” still deserves a look-see. ; Ford, Oldman steal‘Air Force One’ ; _FORCE from page 4 [ (Whoops, no, that’s just ragweed.) ) “Air Force One” could qualify as 5 a drama, but not a spectacular one. As . might be expected from a movie with ; this set-up, action is the driving force x here, and director Wolfgang Petersen . (“In The Line of Fire”) delivers the goods. Better yet, he manages to do it 5 without turning the movie into some 1 thing outlandishly wild and crazy, trying to keep at least one foot on realistic terra firma. All parties involved with the film do a fine job of acting, with particular kudos going out to Ford and Oldman. = After some lackluster reviews from f “Sabrina” and “The Devil’s Own,” “Air Force One” puts Ford back on an upswing, and once again shows he t can handle roles covering both the r action and drama sides of the fence. * Oldman is intense as always, dis " playing subtly horrific bits of behav r ior, and proving you don’t have to be a raving lunatic to be nutty as a fruit The Facts Title: “Air Force One” Stars: Harison Ford, Gary Oldman, Glenn Close Director: Wolfgang Petersen Rating: PG 13 (violence, language) Grade: 13 Five Words: President’s plane hijacked in mid-air cake. (Come to think of it, has Oldman ever played someone nor mal?) “Air Force One” does lose some points for credibility, especially with the “swerve-and-screech” scene dur ing an aborted landing attempt. While some of the computer special effects are really funky, it gets almost annoying after a while. Still, after some of the cinematic bile that has come out this summer, “Air Force One” is worth a look-see.
