For Radiohead, it has only taken about 3 years and two albums to com plete that step. After a mediocre debut album, Radiohead quickly moved on to better things with its sophomore release, “The Bends.” A nearly flawless col lection of guitar-driven songs, “The Bends” for many became an instant classic of sorts. And now, after a couple years of waiting, “OK Computer” has arrived to fulfill the promise that “The Bends” set out for the world to see. It succeeded. More of a symphony than a pop album, the 12 songs that make up “OK Computer” all explore the feel ings of alienation and dehumaniza tion that have started to develop in the face of rapidly advancing technology. But the highly personal nature of the lyrics is eclipsed by Radiohead’s sonic prowess. Thom Yorke’s high vocals are becoming more challenging and impressive with every consecutive album. Here, they are nearly chilling. And the triple-layered guitar sound that at first sounded overbear ing but now sounds impressively complex and textured is at a peak. The impressions the songs leave behind range from the throbbing relief of “Airbag” to the enchanting beauty of “Lucky.” Traditional rock song structure is also abandoned here, even on the album’s first single, “Paranoid Android.” Six minutes long and full of rhythmic twists and time changes, in the context of the whole album it seems to flow in and out from the songs that precede and follow it. And even on its own, “Paranoid Android” is strong enough to make for a sub stantial - if unorthodox - single. Lyrically, the theme of escapism runs throughout this album, particu larly in “Subterranean Homesick Alien,” a song in which Yorke sings his wish to have extraterrestrials come down to Earth and take him away to a better place. And “Exit Music (For a Film)” stays true to its title, with its story of a couple escap ing from tyrannical parents. In short, “OK Computer” does more than fulfill any expectations left behind after “The Bends,” it exceeds them. And if this is what Radiohead can accomplish on its third album, the future of this band could be more than exciting, it could be frightening. — Jeff Randall i i YOU SAY YOU CAN RIDE?
