Adding over-the-top performers John Travolta (a Woo alum from “Broken Arrow”) and Nicolas Cage to the bullet-ridden foray doesn’t hurt the film’s chances of success, either. Flamboyant-but-cold-blooded criminal Castor Troy (Cage) plants a deadly biological weapon, but falls into a coma during his capture by FBI agent Sean Archer (Travolta), whose son was killed by Troy years before. Troy’s brother is the only person who knows where the weapon is located. He’s in a maximum security prison... and the only person he will talk to is Troy. What a predicament! Thus, Archer undergoes a radical surgical procedure in which his face is removed and replaced with the face of the man who killed his son. Unfortunately, Troy emerges from his coma, and in attempt to save face (snicker), takes Archer’s face - and identity - and begins to wreak some good old-fashioned havoc, while Archer searches for a way to escape from prison. Woo gives us his all, both on the action and drama fronts, showing how each character reacts to the other’s surroundings. Cage and Travolta go way over the top with their performances, with Travolta coming out having the most fun. The Facts Title: “Face-Off” Stars: John Travolta, Nicolas Cage, Joan Allen, Gina Gershon Director: John Woo Rating: R (violence, language) Grade: B+ Five Words: Woo gives wild ride In typical Woo fashion, the bul lets fly by the billion, but these bozos couldn’t hit the broad side of an obese yak if they tried, and the speedboat chase at the end is one for the books. Although “Face-Olf ” runs a little long (almost 2-lA hours), the time - and the five bucks - are well-spent. It’s summertime, so time again for Disney to bring out another big screen flick loaded with music, laughs and fun. This year’s entry: the heroic tale of “Hercules.” Although Disney changes things just a wee bit (well, maybe more than just a wee bit), the basic tale remains the same: Hercules (Tate Donovan), son of Zeus, becomes mortal through the diabolical plot of Hades (James Woods), but retains his incredible strength. In an effort to retain his lost godhood, he must prove himself a true hero, and begins training with salacious satyr Phil (Danny DeVito) to do just that. Hades is still trying to get rid of the strongman, but to no avail. So he sends in Meg (Susan Egan) to dis cover Hercules’ weaknesses. The animation for “Hercules” is again superb, although the computer ized Hydra was a bit out of place in the surroundings of the Disney-style animation. Still good stuff, though. Everyone does a great job on the voice-overs, but Woods’ performance as Hades is worth the price of admis sion alone. He gives Hades a street hustler attitude, but doesn’t lose the playfulness or evil required to keep the character interesting. In essence, The Facts Title: “Hercules” Stars: Tate Donovan, James Woods, Danny DeVito, Susan Egan Director: John Musker and Ron Clements Rating: G (C’mon, it’s Disney!) Grade: B+ Five Words: Disney rewrites classic tale...again. Hades is an animated James Woods with blue flaming hair. “Hercules” is a fun film, in true Disney fashion, but it’s not a classic. You just know Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith had a blast making this flick. Between Jones’ no-nonsense atti tude and Smith’s too-cool-for-words demeanor, the chemistry between the two is instantaneous and just sparkles with intensity ... and finan cial success. Longtime agent K (Jones) and newcomer J (Smith) trade in all proof of existence in exchange for the duty of maintaining the security and safety of the Earth monitoring aliens who have been living in peace among us for the past few decades. They are the Men In Black, who work through a super-secret govern ment agency, using technology and weaponry beyond the realm of believability ... except in the movies. However, an inteigalactic war is about to erupt, with Earth as the first object of destruction, unless J and K can find and destroy a “bug” (Vincent D’Onoffio) sent to com plete the disaster. With the repeated help of coroner Dr. Laurel Weaver (Linda Fiorentino, showing a knack for comedy), they work toward their goal of planetary safety. Director Barry Sonnenfeld (“The Addams Family”) let things run fast and loose throughout the film, mak ing the audience laugh and shiver simultaneously without plunging the film into a pit of stupidity. Plus, pairing up always-depend able Tommy Lee Jones with current hot ticket Will Smith was a stroke of genius. D’Onofrio is also terrific as the spastic bug-assassin, dripping cockroaches and slime wherever he goes. The Facts Title: “Men in Black” Stars: Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smith, Vincent D’Onofrio, Linda Fiorentino Director: Barry Sonnenfeld Rating: PG-13 (mild language, cartoon violence) Grade: A Five Words: Don't take the film seriously. The special effects are a particu lar hoot, whether J is going toe-to toe with a 12-foot alien cockroach or K is using the neuralyzer to replace memories of those ordinary people who have “seen” aliens or the MIB. Loads of chuckles from begin ning to end, “Men In Black” is the film to see. 02 Appliances 05 Bicycles 10 Books 13 Clothing 16 Computers 20 Furniture 30 Jewelry 40 Misc.
