Gilmore said the players are
slowly getting over the shock and
disappointment from learning
assistant coach Theresa Becker
would not be given the position.
The players had said after Beck
left that they supported Becker for
the position.
“We were really upset about it
at first but she just told us that we
had to look at the thing from a pos
itive aspect,” Gilmore said.
Gilmore said they are now
starting to look forward to work
ing with Sanderford, who is the
winningest coach in Western
Kentucky history. Sanderford had
been Western Kentucky’s coach
for 15 years and led the
Hilltoppers to 12 NCAA
Tournament appearances in the

'Speed 2’ can’t keep pace
with series’ first film
SPEED from page 8
on a Caribbean cruise to discuss
their future.
You can guess the kind of luck
they have; terrorist Geiger (Willem
Dafoe) takes over the ship’s com
puter systems, sets up explosive
charges all over the ship and forces
an evacuation.
| Will our heroes put up with this?
No way! They stay on board and
fight it out, along with protecting a
stranded group of passengers and a
somewhat inept group of crew
members (who redeem themselves
as the movie progresses).
We eventually find out Geiger
isn’t just crazy (what was the first
clue?), but is also dying, though he
has slowed the process by attaching
lawyers (I mean leeches) to his body
for short periods of time. He
designed all the computer systems
for the ship, but was let go from the
company when his medical condi
tion was discovered. He’s here for
his pound of flesh (and a robbery,
which doesn’t really make sense if
he’s dying).
The characters here are card
board at best, and the bland setting
of the cruise ship doesn’t help. Even

Hie Facts
Htle: “Speed 2: Cruise Control”
Stars: Jason Patric, Sandra Bullock,
Willem Dafoe
Director: Jan De Bont
Rating: PG-13 (language, violence)
Grade: D
Five Words: Let this film die quickly
Dafoe, who usually plays a great
bad guy, looks like he’d rather be
anywhere else. Bullock is of par
ticular waste here, acting simply as
a vehicle to deliver most of the
same lines she had in the first film.
Oh, but this time they’re funny!
Oh... I get it. Ha ha ha ha, that’s so
silly. Oh, those scriptwriters! What
hams they are!
There’s no originality to this
film; no punch or new life. It’s just
a standard “maniac-versus-cop”
plot, which happens to be on a
ship. Beyond the opening action
scene, this flick is barely worth a
rental price, let alone paying to see
it on the big screen.
Better to kiss a drunk platypus
than to waste your money on
“Speed 2: Cruise Control.”
