WKU coach expected to sign with NU

women’s basketball coach Paul
Sanderford is expected to be named the
new Nebraska women’s basketball coach
at a press conference in Lincoln on
Friday.
Two unnamed sources have con
firmed Sanderford will replace former
Husker coach Angela Beck, who
resigned at the end of April for a position
with the San Jose Lasers of the American
Basketball League. Sanderford, who is
the winningest coach in Western
Kentucky history, also has a confirmed

Sanderford had been Western
Kentucky’s coach for 15 years and led the
Hilltoppers to 12 NCAA Tournament
appearances in the last 13 seasons. This
season Western Kentucky qualified for
its 14th straight postseason tournament
and lost to Ariz na in the first round of
the NCAAs.
Sanderford’s biggest success at
WKU came in 1992 when he led the
Hilltoppers to the NCAA Championship
game before losing to Stanford. The
Hilltoppers have advanced to the Final
Four three different times under
Sanderford, who has compiled a 365-120
overall record at Bowling Green, Ken.
He will be taking over a program that
has gone to just three NCAA
Tournaments and has only one won
game. All three NCAA appearances
were during Beck’s 11-year term as head
coach.
Nebraska finished this past season
19-9. The Huskers started the season
with a school best nine game win streak
but finished the season 2-6 and failed to
qualify for the NCAA Tournament
Sanderford will be inheriting one of
Nebraska’s most talented squads. All
American honorable mention player
Anna DeFoige will be returning for her
season. Also last season Nebraska had
four freshman who played throughout
the year and gained experience.
Last week, it was announced that
Beck’s assistant, Theresa Becker, would
not get the position. Becker and
Sanderford were the two remaining can
didates for the job.
Becker had been Beck’s top assistant
eight of the last 11 years.
