Minors have to look a little
harder to find entertainment
By Pat Miner
Staff Reporter
Most students who enter UNL are under 21 and stay that way
through at least some of their junior year. Being under 21 like several
incoming students, I feel it’s my duty to explain some things those our
age can do to have a fun time in this town without being able to go to the
bars.
There are several concerts that come through the Lincoln area. In the
last year, the Reverend Horton Heat has made appearances at the Royal
Grove Nite Club, located at 340 W Comhusker Hwy. Matthew Sweet,
who grew up in Lincoln premiered several the tracks off his new album
during a show in March, and the Skeletones recently played a free show
at the Royal Grove.
Other establishments get their share of concerts, including Betti’s
Rainbow, located at 4145 O St. Regional and local acts including
Mulberry Lane frequently play the coffee house. Featuring live music 7
days a week, the shop is also open until 1 everyday giving a great atmos
phere to those who want a break from studying.
The house also has one of the best cups of joe in town. Coffee hous
es are very popular in Lincoln, including the Mill and the Coffee House,
located at 8™ and P and 13™ and P, respectively.
The Lied Center is gearing up for a great year this year. With perfor
mances including violinist Itzhak Perlman Sept. 14 and Les Miserables
Sept. 23-28, it looks to be a blockbuster year.
The Mary Reipma Ross Film Theater, located right on campus in the
Sheldon Art Gallery, frequently gets intriguing independent films.
Films such as “Kids,” “Trees Lounge” and “Hype!,” a documentary
about the northwest rock explosion, drew in several students.
The Stuart Theatre, located at 13™ and P, recently drew record
crowds for the “Star Wars” trilogy, and is probably the best place to see
a movie in town. The intimite style of the Futz Theatre, located at 9™ and
O, is a tremendous place to see a play, with new shows running -- on the
average -- every few weeks.
Other spots include being a mallrat at Gateway or spending an
adventurous weekend night at Amigos. Hey, you can always do home
work.
Probably the best advice I can give to any incoming freshman is
when in doubt, just take “O” Street.
