Left your tapes in your hot car long enough until they’ve all melted enough to sound like “The Best of Queen?” There’s always radio. Depending on what you like to listen to, there’s something on the airwaves that should sate your appetite, no matter what your thing is — “alternative,” real alternative, bubblegum pop, country or whatever else. 90.3 KRNU is a game of Russian Roulette. The campus-based radio station can play whatever they want, so you’ll find anything from dream pop to techno to chant music to jazz to old rock. It’s hard to find a station where the Rolling Stones, Louis Armstrong and Nine Inch Nails can all share an hour, but KRNU may just pull it off. A lot of times you may need to 101.9 The Edge is the mainstream alterna tive. Whatever is going around as popular for the older crowd, this is where you’ll find it. The Chemical Brothers, Depeche Mode, Sublime, Nine Inch Nails, Bush — contemporary rock, as they call it. At one time they were only playing the harder edge stuff (and they still won’t play the real poppy stuff), but they’ve loosened up a bit so you can catch some lighter stuff too. They also typically have the local shock-rock jocks. Many of them will do whatever it takes to get your attention. 92.9 The Eagle plays the more classic rock. Led Zepplin, Blue Oyster Cult, The Eagles, Rolling Stones — it’s seventies stuff, for the most part. The DJ’s here aren’t as loud-mouthed as on other radio stations and the focus is on the music. If you were listening to the “Dazed and Confused” soundtrack over and over again, here you’ll find your home. 98.5 Sweet 98 is bubblegum to the point of sticking to your teeth. The majority of its listeners have to have an adult sitting in the passenger seat when they drive. The Spice Girls are played once an hour or so. This is the kind of station that plays the Billboard music chart in its entirity. It’s pop music uncut. 95.1 KNET plays lighter “alternative” rock, or “adult rock” as they call it. A good dosage of eighties mixed in with some ninties. Culture Club, Donna Lewis, Duran Duran — that type of music. 102.7 KFRX walks along the same road for the most part. You get the lighter side of alterna tive here also. Jewel, Counting Crows, Toad the Wet Sprocket, The Verve Pipe — none of the hard-edge stuff, really, just the lighter side. U2 is about as hard rock as they get. 106.3 The Blaze plays rock is its older form. The Cult, Van Halen, Judas Priest, Queensryche — the more classic type of rock, plus the hard edge of the modern stuff — Local H, Smashing Pumpkins and the like. It’s the type of station where you might think a lot of listeners have their leather jackets on with a ton of chains hanging from it. 98.1 Froggy is the one-stop country super stop. From Shania Twain to Blackhawk, if country’s your thing, chances are Froggy will be your station. So you have your choices when it comes to music if you want to turn on, tune in and drop out — pick that station that suits your fancy and hang for a while.
