So you say you want to see a movie... Lincoln may not be the biggest town in the world, but that doesn't mean it's short on havens for filmgoers By Gerry Beltz Features Editor Whether on a date or just hanging out with friends, movies are one of the most popular pastimes for college students everywhere. And UNL is no different. But you are asking yourself, “Self, what should I know about going to or renting a movie in Lincoln, Nebraska?” Good question, self... Movie Iheatres If you’re a big-screen movie buff and live on or near UNL City Campus, that’s double the good luck because 24 of Lincoln’s 31 movie screens are less than three blocks from the campus. The Douglas Theatre Company owns all but two of Lincoln’s movie theaters: the Joyo Theatre in northeast Lincoln and the Mary Riepma Ross Film Theatre, located here on UNL Campus in the Sheldon Art Gallery (12th and R Streets). Most of the downtown-based movie theaters are based in three main intersec tions; at 13th and Q Streets, one can find the StarShip Nine Theatre, a “discount house,” which means it shows second-run movies for a lower price ($1.75 a seat, in du^as^Afoucarftmis^hi^laceMt^iig^ SPORTS BAR & GRILL 955 West "O" Street Lincoln, NE 68528 (402) 434-7789 http.V/www. winkeno. cc. n Promotions are subject to change. Keep toddling a block south to 13th and P Streets to hit another half-dozen screens. Here, you’ve got the Stuart Theatre (BIG theater with a usually-closed balcony), Cinema Twin (great upper-level seats), and the Douglas 3 (incredibly average theatri cal experience guaranteed). Grab your partner, turn to the west and walk a block to 12th and P Streets to finish your tour. On the southwest comer is the Lincoln 3 (GREAT sound systems) and the Plaza 4 Theatre (average, but getting bet ter) to the northwest. Outside of the downtown area is fairly skim pickings for movie screens so far. In Southeast Lincoln - 56th and Highway 2, to be precise - is the Edgewood 3, one of Lincoln’s best overall movie theaters. Great sound, excellent popcorn and ample park ing make it a great theater to visit. In northeast Lincoln, the East Park 3 (66th and O Streets) awaits. Granted, the teenager factor must be considered here, but construction is currently underway at East Park to double the number of current theaters, as well as adding stadium seating, so look for this theater to jump in the rat ings around October or so. The previously-mentioned Joyo Theatre is also located in northeast Lincoln (60th and Havelock Avenue), and shows previously-run films. The snack bar at the Joyo is a definite treat, featuring items such as slush puppies, cheap candy and cookies. The StarShip, Lincoln and Plaza the aters all have computerized ticket sales, which means tickets for any of that day’s shows can be purchased anytime during regular box office hours. Note this as a handy weekend tip to avoid waiting in long lines. Video Rentals Maybe you’re staying at home. Maybe you have a date. Maybe you’re just a pathetic loser. It doesn’t matter, just rent a movie! If there’s one business Lincoln has an abundance of, it is video rental places. You can barely swing a dead emu around in this city without hitting a video store. Granted, most of the video places around here are Blockbuster Video joints (ten of the beasts!), but a few other stores have manages to find success around the big;blue-and-yellow signs.
