Union expansion remains on schedule UNION from Page 6 most of the south side of the base ment between the two stairwells. On the second story of the Union, two new suites of meeting rooms are being built, along with a 300-seat sloped-floor auditorium. New offices for Student Involvement and a stu dent involvement resource center will be built. This resource center will have services for students to make posters, address labels and other needed sup plies for student organizations. It will also be open until 9 or 10 p.m. each night for students’ convenience. The plaza in front of the Union on the north side will be the last part of the expansion, Swanson said. This should be done in the summer of 1998, Blake said. Toward the beginning of the sec ond semester of the 1997-98 school year, the building should be com pletely enclosed, Blake said. After that, construction will proceed at a much faster rate. The new addition is one of many parts that have been added on to the original 1938 Nebraska Union building, Blake said. The part of the Union that faces “R” street is the orig inal building, but as it extends further north, changes in the building mark parts that were added throughout the years. This newest addition will give the building a 60-year construction histo ry, as one side of the building was erected in 1938 and the other in 1998.
