Amnesty chapter delivers aid Letter-writing campaign frees political prisoners - --- By Lindsay Young Staff Reporter It took five minutes to free more than 25 of the 90 political prisoners the campus chapter of Amnesty Inter national worked for this year. That is, five minutes for each let ter written on behalf of each prisoner. The campus chapter of Amnesty International wrote letters for 25 cases during the year, averaging 15 letters a case. Each case dealt with one pris oner, or with a group of prisoners in different countries around the world. “Five minutes to save someone’s life is pretty amazing,” said Lisa Sock, campus chapter and Nebraska area coordinator. L/V/VI\ 9 U UVtllV/1 pv/lllivwi UVIVUVV major, said these letters — multiplied by the thousands of letters that arrive at the countries for each individual every day — do make a difference. Many cases include imprisonment of journalists and female activists. Foreign and domestic journalists are targeted because of their role in pro moting democracy and justice, Sock said, and women are often targeted because of their stand for women’s rights. One of the areas the chapter worked for during the year included the violation of women’s rights in Turkey, where rape as torture was fre quent and, within the last decade, was becoming a war tool in Turkey, Rwanda, Yugoslavia and other coun tries. Sock said a considerable change International pressure from other coun tries makes it think twice about why the person is kept in prison ” Lisa Sock campus chapter and Nebraska area coordinator has been made in human-rights stan dards in Turkey, gauging the number of prisoners who have been released. The campus chapter also worked on behalf of violations in Nigeria, where women were subjected to fe male castration against their will. This was common in Africa, Sock said, and also was wrong because of unsafe con ditions and the negligence of not hav ing a health professional at the scene. The chapters of Amnesty Interna tional, along with the hundreds of in dividuals who participate in letter writing, are informed about these and other cases through the Urgent Action Network. Amnesty International has infor mants looking out for human-rights violations across the world, Sock said. If they find a suspected violation, the Amnesty International headquar ters in London is contacted and some of the 150 investigators are put on the case. Sometimes a case is nailed down within 24 hours, defined as a definite case, and often within a 36-hour span, the Urgent Action Network has con tacted chapters around the world and the letter-writing has begun, Sock said. Individuals who are not involved in a chapter of Amnesty International are contacted through the mail, or may check on cases through the Internet. “A rapid response is crucial to a case,” Sock said. She said a quick response lets the governments know that the violation, or unfair imprisonments, cannot be kept secret and that the case is being publicized globally. Letters are written directly to the governments to let them know what the concern is. Working from the top down is the most effective, Sock said. “International pressure from other countries makes it think twice about why the person is kept in prison,” she said. And though all cases may not end successfully, each case was treated separately, Sock said, and as each came through positively, it was a new victory. “Case after case I would literally do a dance in my house.” s FOR YOUR TEXBOOKS IN ADDITION TO CASH!
