Knudsen said.
Other viewers agreed. Gina Matkin,
training coordinator and adviser at the
resource center, said the show was more
emotional than she expected.
“I wondered if parents of gay kids felt
like they knew a little more about the
process their children must have went
through,” Matkin said. “I found it very
emotional.”

thought the humorous way the show was
presented helped ease the touchy subject
matter.
“Humor has a way of making people
feel at ease,” Knud sen said. “It might
make sane people more willing to un
derstand.”
Some viewers also thought the reac
tions from Ellen’s friends were very re
alistic. Senior English major John Engle
said some of his own friends reacted in
the same way at his coming out.
“Ellen’s friends’ reactions were pretty
standard,” Engle said. “It’s something
new fa them as well as fa her, and it’s
certainly a drastic change.”
Some viewers were disappointed that
both Chrysler and J.C. Penney Co. Inc.
chose to pull their advertising spots from
the hour of television during the show.
Most thought the companies were only
hurting themselves.
“Corporate America needs to realize
that the gay dollar is huge,” Engle said.
“In the end, they are cutting their own
throats by refusing to advertise.”
Safely fliers
create discord
FLIERS from page 1
has conducted a campus rape awareness cam
paign, said thft, flier was a good but ill-timed
idea.
“I totally agree with the facts,” Rager said.
“But it detracts from the seriousness of the is
sue at hand.”
Rager said she has observed students laugh
ing at the combination of the green flier and
the first safety-alert flier. Both fliers should be
taken seriously, and the new flier should have
been timed accordingly, she said.
She said the green flier would be an excel
lent idea if posted again at the beginning of the
fall semester, when it could increase rape
awareness among new and returning students
without detracting from the important serial
rapisi warning.
Kriss found only (me fault with the flier.
The UNL community must be made aware the
threat of rape exists in all areas, not just in fra
ternities or the Athletic Department, she said.
The serial rapist, for instance, does not ap
pear to target such areas, she said.
“I don’t think we want to limit our hyper
alert state to those environments,” Kriss said.
Christina Brantner, director of the Women’s
Studies Association, said she didn’t think the
green flier detracted from the serious nature of
the suspected serial rapist.
“The purpose was to get people’s attention
and make them think,” she said.
The original safety-alert flier on the serial ,
rapist was poorly framed and not the whole
story on rape, Brantner said.
So a group of caring students in the asso
ciation decided to dispel myths the first flier
might have created, she said.
“We knew that every young black male of a
certain age group would be targeted,” Brantner
said. “It’s a racist thing.
“The fact is, that most of those rapes occur
by people we know,” she said, not by strangers
of one particular ethnicity.”
