Cityfc one serviceman fixes
broken meters on R Street
By Josh Funk
Staff Reporter
The city’s one serviceman is work
ing to repair the faulty parking meters
along R Street in front of the Nebraska
Union.
Two weeks ago, a Daily Nebras
kan investigation found that nearly
one-third of the meters along R Street
from 12th Street to 16th Street either
kept time incorrectly, registered less
than 60 minutes when a quarter was
deposited or some combination of the
two problems.
Traffic engineer Larry Brage said
the city hasn’t been able to look at all
of the meters because its serviceman
was on vacation for five days.
The city pulled the timing mecha
nism from eight of the meters for test
ing.
To test the timing of the meters,
the serviceman must remove the
mechanism from the meter and take
it into his shop for testing.
While the meters are being tested
they are replaced with reliable mecha
nisms from stock.
In the shop the meters are hooked
up to a diagnostic timer to evaluate
how well they keep time.
“Of the eight we have looked at so
far we found one that was really bad
and replaced the timing mechanism
on several of the meters,” Brage said.
Many of the jammed meters along
the street were fixed in response to
complaints from the police depart
ment, Brage said.
The city will continue to work to
fix the rest of the faulty meters along
R Street.
“I am by no means satisfied with
what we have done so far,” Brage said.
“The meters should be working well.”
Meters that continue to perform
badly even after the serviceman works ^
on them will be replaced.
“If we can’t get any assurance that
these meters are going to work well, I
don’t want them out there,” Brage
said.
New ASUN members
V
receive appointments
By Brad Davis
Staff Reporter
After several weeks of recruitment
and selection processes, new commit
tee members were appointed at
Wednesday’s meeting of the Associa
tion of Students of the University of
Nebraska.
Appointments were unanimously
approved for 33 ASUN committees
during the last meeting of the semes
ter, which was at the Nebraska East
Union.
A “plethora” of applications were
received by ASUN Speaker Viet
Hoang, who was in charge of appoint
ing the new members.
“(Committee members) are the
people who give the senate notifica
tion on what student government
needs to work on — it’s kind of a
think-tank,” 2nd vice president
Malcolm Kass said.
Kass attended the last meeting of
the Residence Hall Association as an
ASUN representative and said the
group was discussing extended shuttle
bus service during dead week. The
buses will run from 11:15 pjn. to 2
a.m. during dead week and finals
week.
In other ASUN news:
■ Government Bill No. 8 passed
unanimously. The bill, which deals
with “phased-out” technology, will
recommend that computers replaced
by the new technology fee be given to
student organizations at little or no
charge. The student organizations
would be responsible for the mainte
nance of thedonated computers.
“The point behind this bill is that
there will be a large number of com
puters that will be replaced. They have
not been offered to student organiza
tions before, and many of the offices
have no computers,” President Curt
Ruwe said.
■ Senate Bill No. 2 also was
unanimously passed. The bill recog
nized the new constitutions of two stu
dent organizations: Golf Course Sup
port Association of America and the
University Program Council.
Hoang applauded the senate for its
enthusiastic work during the last half
of this semester, and encouraged them
to continue improving the campus
when ASUN reconvenes next semes
ter.
