Sergeant offers safety tips for moving out By Kasey Berber Staff Reporter Moving out of the residence halls and greek houses might be a relief to some students, but property theft dur ing the move could make the experi ence far from relieving. University of Nebraska-Lincoln Police Sgt. Mylo Bushing said theft could be avoided if students took proper safety precautions. One such precaution, Bushing said, is few students to avoid packing up their vehicles the day before they leave. Bushing said a better option would be to load up vehicles on Saturday morning. “If students can’t do this, that load ing items into the trunk is a safer op tion,” Bushing said. Students leaving their vehicles un locked or unattended is another com mon mistake, Bushing said. Bushing said criminals have stolen everything from stereos to hill suitcases in the time it took students to run up stairs and back. “If you don’t have a friend or rela tive watching the car, then lock it,” Bushing said. Finally, Bushing said residence hall rooms must be secure when students are making trips downstairs or to the car. “You have to protect yourself on both ends,” Bushing said. “People are able to get in and out of the dorms quite easily, so security is more of a con cern.” But if students have property sto len, Bushing advises them to file a re port with the police department imme diately. “The officer might be able to ques tion other people in the vicinity,” Bush ing said. Copying down model and serial numbers can also help in the recovery process for stolen goods, he said.
