Huskers compete in three meets By Vince D*Adamo Staff Reporter For the second time in as many weeks, the Nebraska men’s and women’s track and field teams will compete in three different meets over the weekend. But two of those meets are the most prestigious outdoor events of the sea son. NU will send 25 Comhuskers to compete at the 88th annual Drake Re lays today and Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa. The most notable NU athletes mak ing the trip east to Drake Stadium are long jumper Angee Henry, a two-time NCAA long jump champion, and 1997 NCAA Indoor shot put champion Tressa Thompson. Drake officials ex pect more than 2,700 athletes from more than 340 schools to compete. Although the Drake Relays present quality competition, NU Coach Gary Pepin said the meet leaves a little to be desired. “It’s kind of disappointing,” Pepin said. “For example you have Sherri Macfee as a Big 12 Indoor champion who’s been running well and she couldn’t get in.” Macfee is the, defending indoor champion in the women’s 1,000-meter run. Also, the Drake Relays do not offer every event — such as the women’s 200-meter dash. Most NU sprinters and hurdlers will travel to Franklin Field in Philadelphia for the 103rd annual Penn Relays. Last year, more than 86,000 fans attended the prestigious meet. The NU women’s 4 X 400-meter relay team, which placed third at the NCAA Indoor Championships, led the way. “They’re all healthy,” Pepin said. “We haven’t put them all together.” The Husker athletes who did not meet entrance requirements for the Drake and Penn Relays will compete at the Missouri-Kansas City Invite on Saturday at the UMKC Track, a meet which offers every event. For that reason, Pepin said, in some cases athletes are better served competing in this meet because it is similar to a conference meet. “It makes a lot of difference,” Pepin said. “In the Midwest you only have so many days of good weather. You can’t just skirt around it and all of the sudden say you’re going to run your event.” Defense seeks good end GAME from page 10 if Terrell Farley catches on — to the NFL, the defense appears ready to pick up where it left off last season, when NU ranked in the nation’s top seven in all four major statistical categories*. - Osborne mentioned linebackers Jay Foreman, Brian Shaw and Eric Johnson; defensive backs Jerome Peterson, Eric Warfield and Mike Brown and linemen Chad Kelsay, Mike Rucker and Jason Wiltz among those who have impressed coaches this spring. “A lot of guys who never really had any game experience have come in and played really well in spring ball,” Wistrom said. “Their intensity has been great. Everybody has come out with the right attitude every day.” And a successful showing Saturday, he said, can cap the spring on a sensa tional note. “With this group, you don’t have to show a lot of vocal leadership,” Wistrom said. “You can lead by ex ample. And it’s always more fun with people in the stands. Hopefully, we can put on a good show for them.” Notes: 66 I don't know if people ought to v come in here expecting 100 points to be scored Tom Osborne NU football coaeh Children 12 and under can enter the Memorial Stadium gates free of charge Saturday by agreeing to recite the Drug Free Pledge. Osborne and Gov. Ben Nelson will speak to the crowd at half time of the Red-White Game. UNL stu dents with identification can also en ter free, and tickets for adults cost $3. Sawyer Brown, the country music group that dedicated “The Nebraska Song” to the memory of former NU quarterback Brook Berringer, will sing the national anthem before Saturday’s game. Husker women advance to round 2 From Staff Reports The Nebraska women’s tennis team advanced to play third-seeded TfexasA&M in the second round of the Big 12 Confer ence Tournament at Austin, Texas. The Comhuskers defeated Iowa State 5-1 on Thursday to move on to today’s 9 a.m. quarterfinals match against the Aggies. NU won all the singles matches other five singles matches, the Husk ers did not drop a set. For the Huskers, No. 1 singles player Sandra Noetzel beat Ericka Asmuss 6-2, 6-3; Lisa Hart beat Kendra Leese 6-1,7-6 at No. 2 singles; No.4 singles player Jennifer Thoste defeated Mary Rumbaoa 7-5,6-0; Lara Bolts beat Angie Miller 64,64 at No. 5 singles; and No. 6 singles saw If NU beats Texas A&M it will play the winner of the Oklahoma-Baylor dual on Saturday. The NU men’s team had its season come to an end with a 4-0 loss to Baylor. The Huskers lost the doubles point, losing all three matches, and lost three singles matches to the Bears. Nebraska finished the season 9-14 and 1-8 in the conference. 11-800-USA-NAVY www.navyjobs.com OEE: Council on International Educational Exchange c2lLmKiman or v i We’re ciri H | tlie wefcX H I http://www.dougtheatres.com | Movie Info Line; 'H fl 441-0222 fl H Call for Showtimes! 4 EDGEWOOD 3 9 COMING SOON □ DOUGLAS THEATRE CO. 44 Years of Excellence! ■ - -■ - - I THIS YEAR A LOT OF COLLEGE SENIORS WILL BE GRADUATING Under the Army’s Loan Repayment program, you could get out from under with a three-year enlistment.
