at all. The only place to hear local
music by local musicians is or
KRNU.”
The appreciation by many lo
cal bands regarding KRNU’s will
ingness to exhibit local talent pre
cipitated the benefit concert. But it
was Duffy’s booking agent, Andy
Fairbaim, who brought the project
together. Fairbaim is also a former
KRNU music director.
“Duffy’s is very supportive of
KRNU—they help us out, and we
help them out,” he said. “We are
definitely willing to do it more of
ten, once a semester if they want.”
Fairbaim also said all-ages
shows were not commonplace be
cause of lackluster turnout and a
minimal return on sales.

“People don’t make money at
the door, they make it from the
bar,” Re said. “You can’t even pay
the electric bill from what you
make at the door.”
The $4 cover charge for
Sunday’s concert will pay Du fly’s
sound man, with the rest of the pro

half of Duffy’s, the bands and sup
porters of local music.
“We’ll do all we can to support
their cause and keep KRNU alive,”
Young said. “They are always will

Sunday’s show is expected to
last from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The con

Bobby McFerrin
gives vivacious
vocal concert
MCFERRIN from page 9
the first time. The entire concert was
made from improvisation, and when
McFerrin liked what he heard, his
body and face showed it.
Along with the look of a little boy,
he was also the teacher. Starting a song
with a rhythm, he would then pass the
rhythm onto a member of his group
so that he could add another vocal in
strument.
McFerrin produced sounds that
one would swear was coming from a
drum machine. Then the drum ma
chine would switch to a bass guitar
that would then switch to a saxophone.
But in reality, the only instruments in
the house were voices.
During certain times in the
evening, McFerrin included the audi
ence. When he found out that the en
tire first rows were made of a youth
choir, he asked the choir’s teacher to
lead them in a song. After the choir
finished a line or two of “Lean On
Me,” McFerrin and Voicestra did their
own rendition of the Bill Withers’
song to the audience’s utmost ap
proval.
Perhaps the best part of the evening
was that McFerrin kept the evening
fresh and did not pull, out any old
bones by singing “Don’t Worry, Be
Happy.”
