J-Days culminates today with i journalism honors convocation recog nizing exceptional journalism stu dents, three UNL alumni and a past UNL professor, Berens said. Richard Starmann, senior vice president of communications for the McDonald’s Corp. also will be hon ored and will speak at the convoca tion. Berens said UNL journalism stu dents who are academically in the top 10 percent of their class, students who have scholarships and students who have won journalism awards will be honored at the convocation. One category of special awards is the AVERYs, named after the college’s home in Avery Hall. Jessica, Kennedy, a member of the college’s student advisory board, said the AVERYs are awarded to students who entered examples of their work in news, advertising and broadcasting categories. Andrea Oranford, director of com munications for the Nebraska Alumni Association, said three Outstanding Alumni awards will be given to pro fessionals for service to the journal ism profession, community involve ment and participation in professional organizations. The honorees are: ■ Kris Malkoski, general manager for the Procter & Gamble Co. in Cin cinnati. ■ Don Bryant, who is retiring as the associate athletic director in charge of public relations at UNL. ■ John Knicely, news anchor for WOWT in Omaha. Wilma Crumley, who is not a UNL alumna, will be honored for being the first woman to achieve the rank of full professor of journalism at UNL.
