takedowns with more than 700 in
his career.
NU signed two wrestlers in No
vember, both of which are expected
to wrestle at 118. Kyle Canoyer,
younger brother to Husker 134
„ pounder Brad Canoyer, should
redshirt next season, Neumann said.
Canoyer was the national high
school champion at 119 pounds. He
also was a two-time Iowa state cham
pion out of Riverside High School.
He won the 1996 112-pound crown
and the 1997 125-pound title, fin
ishing his career 127-13.
Paul Gomez, a junior-college
national champion in 1996, will
transfer to Nebraska and is ex
pected to be next year’s starter at
118, Neumann said. Gomez is en
rolled at Lassen 'College in
Susanville, Calif.
Before the signing day, NU was
ranked sixth in the next season’s pre
season poll. Neumann said the Husk
os are hoping to sign one more wres
tler before the middle of next week.

Cochran visited Lincoln last week
end after attending Nebraska’s 85-65
loss to Kansas on March 2 at the Bob
Devaney Sports Center. The No. 1 all
time scorer in Iowa high school his
tory said he enjoyed his meetings with
Husker players and coaches.
“People get a lot of misconceptions
about Coach Nee,” Cochran said. “I
had never met him until this year, but
once I got to know him, it was like a
spark and it caught ahold of me. There
was something about Danny Nee, and
it pulled me toward him.”
At 175 pounds, Cochran has hit the
weights hard in the last year, he said,
and would still like to add some
strength and 10 to 15 pounds after
enrolling at Nebraska.
“I’ve gotten to the point where I can
push people around at this level,” he said,
“but college will be a lot different”
Cochran achieved the highest level
of success at TVi Center High School,
scoring 2,650 points in 93 career
games, and averaging 33 points, eight
assists and 6.6 rebounds per game as
a senior. For his career, he scored more
than 20 points 81 times and led his
school to a 76-17 record and a pair of
state-tournament appearances.
At Nebraska, he said, he’ll be
happy to play a contributing role as
point guard Tyronn Lue pesters oppo
nents with his speed. Lue’s quickness
may leave Cochran open on the pe
rimeter, where he made 352 of 851 3
point attempts in high school.
“Tyronn Lue can break down a de
fense and kick it back out,” Cochran
said. “At Nebraska, I’m not going to
have three guys draped all over me, and
who better to learn from and try to es
tablish myself with than Tyronn Lue?”
Williams, from The Kinkaid
School, a private institution in Hous
ton, averaged 21 points, nine assists
and five rebounds as a senior. He said
he felt relieved to finally sign his let
ter of intent Wednesday morning.
“It feels real good,” he said. “Now
I can sit back and enjoy the rest of se
nior year.”
Williams also visited NU last
month, when he met Cochran and
Smith. Last summer at a tournament
in Colorado Springs, Colo., Williams
played with Brant Harriman, a 6-11
center from Mason City, Iowa, who
signed with Nebraska last November.
“Once they see me and I start work
ing out, I will be able to contribute
right away. I feel like Nebraska is right
on the edge of getting into the NCAA
Tournament and becoming a domi
nant force in the Big 12.”
