KRNU returns to air after cable fixed
From Staff Reports
After more than two days of
being off the air, KRNU hit the air
waves Wednesday afternoon as
scheduled.
After a weekend windstorm, the
College of Journalism and Mass
Communications’ student-run ra
dio station was disconnected Sun
day because of a severed transmit
ter cable.
High winds had caused a pro
tective sheath to come off the cable
connecting the station to its trans
mitting tower on the roof of
Oldfather Hall.
KRNU General Manager Rich
ard Alloway said when the sheath
was removed, the cable was ex
posed to bare sheet metal in the
roof. The high winds caused the
bare cable to rub against the sharp
edges of the sheet metal, eventu
ally wearing the cable down
enough to affect transmission,
Alloway said.
“By the time we could get an
engineer up there Sunday to look
at the cable, it was worn away to
practically nothing,” he said. “It
basically broke off in our hands at
that point.”
Alloway said a tower specialist
was called in and started to replace
the cable about 10 ajn. Wednes
day. The replacement was done by
11:30, he said, allowing the station
to go back on the air about 2 p.m. f

A 13-year-old boy was slashed

afternoon when a fight that started
on a school bus continued on to the

The boy was treated and re

he told police he sustained in a

Lincoln Police Sgt. Ann
Heermann said the boy was hit in
the head while riding the bus after
school. The bump turned into a
shove, and the fight ensued from
there.
The boys got off the bus on the
1700 block of North 23rd Street
and continued to fight. The boy told
police the suspect drew a 4-inch

cut him. The boy ran when the sus
