Since Morphine first exploded
onto the national music scene—three
albums and a handful of singles ago
—the band has made more headlines
for its lack of guitar than for its abun
dance of musical talent.
Fronted by two-string slide bassist
Mark Sandman and finished off by
drummer Billy Conway and saxo
phonist Dana Colley, Morphine’s
musical lineup has brought a new
meaning to the term “power trio.”
But by now, the novelty has worn
off and this Boston-based (well, actu
ally Cambridge, Mass.) band is being
forced to stand up and make music that
sounds good because it is good, not
because it's different.
• And “Like Swimming” seems to
be just the answer.
The band’s fourth album — and
its first for mega-label Dreamworks—
dabbles in much of the same brood
ing jazz and blues that made its first
three albums such a treat to listen to.
Granted, innovation is no longer a
real buzzword for this band. The mem
bers haven’t made a lot of artistic j
progress through their four albums.
But when the songs themselves still
manage to sound cutting-edge, who
really cares?
The Prince-inspired first single,
“Early to Bed,” is a dark and mildly
humorous tribute to after-hours par
tying.
Songs such as “Potion” and the
title track are equally hypnotic, rely
ing heavily on monotonous saxophone
and bass lines that are liable to break
into near insanity at any moment.
The result is an album that is de
ceptively mellow and — at times —
blistering. In other words, it’s the
Morphine that fans across the world
lave come to know and love.

characters.
Director Carl Reiner (“Dead
Men Don’t Wear Plaid”) follows a
formula that just as easily could
have been used in a made-for-TV
flick, but the added sexual innuen
does and language kicked it up to
the big screens. Reiner’s direction,
while good, isn’t anything out
standing; Midler and Farina say

man), he finds himself framed, impris
