Week celebrates Xicano culture The history of the T will be discussed today. By Lindsay Young Staff Reporter Not only will the Xicano Awareness Week celebrate Xicanos, it will strive to educate those who are not familiar with the culture with a week of education and entertainment events. Chandra Diaz, Mexican American Student Association president, said she encouraged the university and community to celebrate “The Xicano Movement in the 21st Century.” Xicano Awareness Week has been planned by the Mexican American Student Association for more than 20 years. Diaz said this year’s celebration will be larger than any. MASA also teamed up with the Women’s Center to present a series of events focused on “La Mujer” (The Woman) on Thursday. One of the first events will be an explanation of why it’s spelled Xicano but pronounced Chicano. The reason for the X will be revealed today, with a discussion of “The History of the ‘X’ in Chicano” at 10 a.m. in the Nebraska Union. Lt. Col. Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch, the highest ranking Latina officer in the U.S. Army, will speak at the closing banquet Friday and at the Youth Day rally on Saturday.
