I-Team mans mission to ax student apathy By Sabah Baker Staff Reporter Student apathy on the UNL campus is an ever-growing problem, and the work of the innovative I-Team tries to combat that problem by getting students involved in cam pus activities. The Student Involvement-sponsored team’s mission is to help educate students on how to get involved in campus organiza tions and civic events. The team recently recruited 13 new members for the 1997-98 academic year. Student Involvement Assistant Director Denise McLain said the I-Team is a unique organization, and the University of Ne braska-Lincoln is (me of the only schools to have such a team. “Most universities don’t have these kind of programs to promote involvement,” McLain said. “UNL won a national innova tive program award two years ago for the work the I-Tcam does.” The 13 new members are going through a semester of training classes where they learn about the university as well as ways to promote student involvement. “The I-Team gives presentations to stu dents about how to get involved,” McLain said. “The members are trained to be effec tive, flexible speakers, and they are prepared to speak in front of groups ranging in size from six people to 200 people.” The training is a learning experience for many of the new members, including Pasha Lu Korber, senior mechanical engineering major. “We learn how to better ourselves as well as how to teach the students how to better themselves through getting involved,” she said. The I-Team gives presentations to classes, residence halls, greek organizations and other groups. The presentations have also been recruiting tools. > “I got involved with the I-Team after see ing a presentation in my University Foun dations class,” said Doug Kucera, sopho more international business major. “I wanted to be able to help others achieve success through involvement, and the I-Team was a place that I could work to achieve this goal.” The new team members have personal goals they wish to achieve through their work on the team as well. Lana Zumbrunn, a freshman broadcasting major, said she wants to work as a group to “educate stu dents in a new way.” “I want to work together well with the team, and do the best possible job that I can to involve others in the university.” Regents OK increase in fees for 1997-98 REGENTS from page 1 In other action, the board: ■ Approved 7-1 the remaining seven projects of a 16-project, $95-million plan to renovate and repair buildings on all four NU campuses. It’s way too much space.” The university should spend more money on improving student access to technology and distance education, and less on renovations, he said.
