Beat poet Ginsberg dies Artist influences generations with sexual, philosophical liberation GINSBERG from page 9 shoes full of blood on the snowbank docks waiting for a door in the East River to open a room full of steam heat and opium.” “Howl” was dedicated to Carl Solomon, a patient he met during a stay in a psychiatric ward. Forty years later, Ginsberg recited his poetry on MTV for Generation X ers. Ginsberg’s poetry placed spon taneity over metered verse, frank language over flowery words. His work was often confessional, dis cussing his homosexuality, his mother’s death and his relation ships. “Kaddish,” one of his most fa mous works, was an Oedipal poem dealing with his mother’s life and death in a mental hospital. It was written in his Manhattan apartment fueled by a combination of amphet amines and morphine. His first exposure to the nascent counterculture came when he was a 17-year-old Columbia University freshman. There he met fellow fu ture beatniks Jack Kerouac, Will iam S. Burroughs and Neal Cassady. The group, disillusioned by conventional society, created their own subculture of drugs and hedonism. “Basically, (they were) just a gang of friends who were very into being literate, and who were inter ested in art, and loved each other,” Ginsberg once said of the Beat Generation’s founding fathers. “Some gay, some straight.” Ginsberg was in thfe gay camp, and became a proponent of homo sexual rights—one of many causes the activist poet embraced. In 1960, he went on television to call for the decriminalization of marijuana. He was arrested in 1967 for protest ing against the Vietnam War in New York, and was tear-gassed a year later while protesting at the Democratic convention in Chicago. He claimed that FBI director J. Edgar Hoover had placed him on a “dangerous security list” in 1965, a distinction that led to airport strip searches for several years whenever he returned to the United States. Ginsberg’s first taste of notori ety came after the publication of “Howl” in 1956. Copies of the book were seized by San Francisco po lice and U.S. Customs officials, and publisher Lawrence Ferlinghetti was charged with publishing an ob scene book. Ferlinghetti was acquitted in 1957, but the case generated enor mous publicity for Ginsberg and his work. Ginsberg was suddenly in demand. Ginsberg remained vital and active well into his 60s, perform ing in Manhattan nightclubs and doing poetry readings. Last year, he recorded his poem “The Ballad of the Skeletons” with musical backing from Paul McCartney and Philip Glass. Kaye produced the single. The funeral will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations should be sent to Jewel Heart Buddhist Cen ter in Ann Arbor, Mich. He was survived by his stepmother, Edith Ginsberg of Paterson, N.J.; his brother, Eugene; and several nieces and nephews. Performances sparkle; second play a challenge THEATRIX from page 9 Jude Hickey gave a holistic perfor mance in the role of Tony Aronica. His depiction of Tony’s stupidity, lust, arrogance and needs was best seen in his haughty eyes and stance. The lev els of emotions through which Hickey transgressed created a riveting char acter. The second show of the evening was “Defying Gravity,” which was centered on the explosion of the Chal lenger shuttle. The Challenger explosion is a tragic and emotionally charged event in the history of America, but the script of “Defying Gravity” made it seem trite and cliched with its con trived and corny symbols. If not for a few key individuals’ performances, this play would have bogged down the audience in the banality of life savers and trapeze artists. Deni Hilger represented Christa McAuliffe in her role as teacher. Her tenderness and enthusiasm complimented her character’s oscilla tion from mother to teacher to astro naut and humanized the Challenger explosion. Jesse Witkowitz easily alternated between child and adult in her role as Elizabeth, who represented McAuliffe’s daughter. At times, how ever, she struggled with the blandness and banality of the lines, especially in the epiphany at the end of the circus scene. John Snell was heartwarming in his performance as Monet. His musi cal voice, child-like enthusiasm and artistic pride created a character who was a father figure and a best friend. Robie Hayek’s performance as C.B. was one of the highlights of the play, adding the compassion and re morse that the script lacked through interpretation. Heidi Maus also gave a compas sionate performance as Donna, the owner of an astronaut-frequented bar. Her nonchalant attitude was wonder fully complimented by her emotional attachment to the astronauts and her pride over having known them. Finally, the technical aspects of “Defying Gravity,” especially Nathan Leach’s lighting design, helped to re inforce the space theme. $QQg____Jgbg ♦♦♦0—1-—^ O »«--! ifalnra*** ocmice ana rrewiea Majors CLINICAL CONDUCT ASSOCIATES Harris Labortories has opportunities availabiefor persons to monitor activities of Study Participants and collect and document data Great experience for science, nursing or premed majors.
