Center simplifies job search
«
On one hand, you want to find something
you’re interested in, but on the other hand
you shouldn’t have your blinders on.”

employment specialist

Although summer jobs aren’t tough
to find, finding one with long-term ben
efits can be difficult.
That’s where Emily Wilber can help.
Wilber, an employment specialist
at the Student Employment and Intern
ship Center, says the SEIC can be a
valuable resource to students beginning
their job searches.
“Students don’t have the time to go
door-to-door looking for internships,”
Wilber said. “We collect that informa
tion and make it available to them.
The SEIC provides a variety of ser
vices to help students, Wilber said.
Advisers are on hand to assist students
in targeting their job searches. The cen
ter also has a web site, with new in
ternships listed daily.
The SEIC will provide an addi
tional service to students by hosting the
Job Prom on April 16. Several poten
tial employers will be on hand to give
students information about available
internships and other jobs.
One company represented will be
Sandhills Publishing, a large employer
of University of Nebraska-Lincoln in
terns. Heather Thomas, a human re
sources consultant at Sandhills Publish
ing, said about 50 percent of the
company’s graduating student interns go
on to work for the company full time.
Sandhills Publishing will employ a
total of 45 interns, of which 20 posi
tions are still available, she said. The
company, formerly the Peed Corp.,
publishes Smart Computing and PC
World magazines, in addition to a va
riety of trade magazines.
Many of the company’s interns will
work on the publications based on their
individual interests, including account
ing, finance, marketing, computers sys
tems training, writing apd editing.
“We hope to put peopled depo
sitions they want, to. be in,” she said.
is available through the cifypf Lincoln.
Pat Kant, an employment manager with
the city ’s personnel department, said re
sumes are being accepted at her office.
Kant said several state offices con
tact her looking for interns. She said
business, criminal justice and engineer
ing majors have found jobs through her
office in the past, but there are no set
internships available.
“We’ll work with the students and
the departments to find something, but
it’s a very informal process,’’ she said.
Wilber said the key of finding an in
ternship is to keep an open mind.
Wilber said students should begin
thittking about internships by their
sophomore year, and figure out where
they need to go to get the jobs they want
She said some sacrifices might have
to be made to find the right job.
“If you want to go into marine bi
ology and stay in Lincoln, you’re in
trouble,’’ she said.
